Candidates can often begin the examinations before completing the full experience required for certification. UK and Ireland candidates normally enter through Chartered IIA membership and use CCMS for the official process. The IIA makes every final eligibility decision.

Scenario: During an operational audit, an internal auditor finds that a control is well designed but staff have not retained evidence that it was performed during the last three months. What is the most appropriate next step?
Trainer reasoning
What is being tested: The distinction between control design and operating effectiveness, and the auditor’s responsibility to obtain sufficient evidence.
Why B is strongest: Missing retained evidence creates uncertainty about operation. The auditor should perform further procedures before reaching a conclusion.
Why the others are weaker: A confuses design with operation. C avoids the audit objective. D reaches a disproportionate recommendation before the evidence has been completed.

When two answers appear plausible, identify where the auditor is in this sequence. A recommendation is normally premature if sufficient evidence has not yet been obtained; a conclusion on operating effectiveness is premature if the auditor has assessed only control design.

UK listed companies and Provision 29
The FRC’s 2024 UK Corporate Governance Code applies generally from 2025, while Provision 29 applies for financial years beginning on or after 1 January 2026. It increases board attention on how material financial, operational, reporting and compliance controls are identified, monitored, evidenced and reported.
Why this matters to internal auditors: CIA topics covering governance, risk, controls, assurance, engagement evidence, findings and monitoring are directly relevant to professionals supporting these environments. CIA is not required by Provision 29.
UK public-sector internal audit
From 1 April 2025, the Global Internal Audit Standards replaced the former Public Sector Internal Audit Standards in the UK public sector, supported by a UK Public Sector Application Note and the revised GovS 009 Internal Audit functional standard.
These developments reinforce the importance of mandate, independence, ARAC support, resources, quality, risk-based work, findings and improvement.
CIA is a professional certification, not a UK statutory licence or a substitute for organisation-specific regulatory advice.
CIA Exam Format, Registration, Retakes & Results
CIA exams are currently delivered at authorised Pearson VUE test centers. The IIA discontinued at-home online proctoring in May 2025. Test-center availability varies by date and location, so confirm a live appointment before finalising your study plan.

For the traditional three-part CIA, candidates sitting from April 1, 2026 receive one official result within three weeks rather than an immediate unofficial score. The same delayed-scoring approach applies to CIA Challenge exams from September 1, 2026.
How Long Does It Take to Prepare for CIA?
Experienced candidates may move faster, while candidates balancing demanding work schedules may need longer. A clear three-phase plan makes preparation easier to manage.
Weeks 1–4: Learn the Part
Complete the core teaching and study material for that part. Focus on understanding the syllabus domains before maximizing question volume.
Weeks 5–8: Practise by Domain
Work through questions topic by topic. Review each incorrect answer and return to weaker domains until accuracy becomes more consistent.
Weeks 9–12: Mocks and Final Revision
Use the final phase for timed part-wise mocks, weak-area revision and exam-strategy practice before your Pearson VUE attempt.
Your trainer can help compress the same three phases around your target exam date and current batch.
CIA Fees in the UK: What You Pay and Who Receives It
UK candidates have separate Chartered IIA membership costs, IIA Global application and examination charges, and EduDelphi preparation tuition. Do not add them together as though they were one provider’s package.

Eligible accounting-credential holders and active CISA holders may complete a one-exam pathway instead of the traditional three parts. Eligibility must be approved through the current IIA process.

Since 1 June 2026, the CIA Challenge pathways use one unified examination aligned with the Global Internal Audit Standards. It contains 150 questions and allows 180 minutes.
