CIA syllabus 2026

Current CIA Exam Parts, Domains and Weightings

English-language candidates in the United States use the 2025 CIA syllabus, aligned with The IIA’s Global Internal Audit Standards. Older 2019-syllabus resources should not be used as the primary basis for current preparation.

Part 1 domain Weight
Foundations of Internal Auditing 35%
Ethics and Professionalism 20%
Governance, Risk Management and Control 30%

Is the 2019 CIA syllabus still current?

Not for English-language CIA candidates. Make sure the principal study material you use is explicitly aligned to the 2025 CIA syllabus.

Practical exam preparation

Learn How to Think Through IIA-Style Questions

CIA questions often present several plausible answers. Training therefore focuses on the principle, evidence and next action the question is testing—not just memorizing terms.

  • Define objectives, scope, risks and engagement priorities
  • Evaluate governance, risk management and internal controls
  • Distinguish control design from operating effectiveness
  • Select and assess audit evidence
  • Interpret findings, root causes, effects and recommendations
  • Choose the auditor’s most appropriate next step
  • Eliminate close distractors and manage exam time
  • Communicate results and monitor management action

Three Computer-Based Exams at Pearson VUE Test Centers

CIA exams are currently delivered at authorized Pearson VUE test centers. The IIA discontinued at-home online proctoring in May 2025. Test-center availability varies by date and location, so confirm a live appointment before finalizing your study plan.

Part 1

125 questions

150 minutes of testing time.

Parts 2 and 3

100 questions each

120 minutes for each exam part.

Passing score

600 scaled

The passing benchmark is 600 on a 250–750 scale, not a raw 80% target.

Program window

3 years

Complete program requirements within The IIA’s current three-year window.

CIA Exam Results in 2026: No Immediate Score

For the traditional three-part CIA, candidates sitting from April 1, 2026 receive one official result within three weeks rather than an immediate unofficial score. The same delayed-scoring approach applies to CIA Challenge exams from September 1, 2026.

Recommended CIA study plan

Allow Around 8–12 Weeks for Each CIA Part

Experienced candidates may move faster, while candidates balancing demanding work schedules may need longer. A clear three-phase plan makes preparation easier to manage.

1

Weeks 1–4: Learn the Part

Complete the core teaching and study material for that part. Focus on understanding the syllabus domains before maximizing question volume.

2

Weeks 5–8: Practice by Domain

Work through questions topic by topic. Review each incorrect answer and return to weaker domains until accuracy becomes more consistent.

3

Weeks 9–12: Mocks and Final Revision

Use the final phase for timed part-wise mocks, weak-area revision and exam-strategy practice before your Pearson VUE attempt.

Need a faster plan?

Your trainer can help compress the same three phases around your target exam date and current batch.

US career context

Is CIA Certification Worth It in the United States?

CIA can be valuable when internal audit, assurance, risk and controls are central to the work you want to do. It does not guarantee employment, promotion or a particular salary.

Internal-audit specialization

CIA is built specifically around internal-audit principles, engagement work and audit-function leadership.

Broad employer relevance

The knowledge applies across financial services, technology, healthcare, manufacturing, government, professional services and other sectors.

Useful alongside other credentials

CPA, CISA, CFE, CMA and risk credentials can complement CIA when your work crosses accounting, technology, fraud or enterprise risk.

US workforce context

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 2025 median annual wage of $83,680 for the broader accountants and auditors occupation, with 5% projected growth from 2025 to 2035 and about 115,300 openings per year. These figures are not CIA-specific and should be treated as broad occupational context.

Frequently asked questions

What is CIA certification?

CIA stands for Certified Internal Auditor. It is a professional internal-audit certification awarded by The Institute of Internal Auditors after a candidate satisfies the relevant eligibility, examination and certification requirements.

How many parts are in the CIA exam?

The traditional CIA pathway has three parts: Internal Audit Fundamentals, Internal Audit Engagement and Internal Audit Function. Together they contain 325 multiple-choice questions.

How long are the CIA exams?

Part 1 has 125 questions and allows 150 minutes. Parts 2 and 3 each have 100 questions and allow 120 minutes.

What is the CIA passing score?

The passing benchmark for each part is a scaled score of 600 on The IIA’s 250–750 scale. This is not the same as a published raw percentage of questions answered correctly.

Can I take the CIA exam from home?

No. The IIA discontinued at-home online proctoring in May 2025. CIA exams are currently delivered at authorized Pearson VUE test centers, subject to live availability and booked-exam instructions.

How long does it take to receive CIA results in 2026?

For traditional CIA exams taken from April 1, 2026, The IIA issues one official result within three weeks. For the CIA Challenge Exam, the same process applies from September 1, 2026.

Yes. You can choose preparation for Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 or the complete three-part route.

Can I take CIA exams before completing the experience requirement?

Candidates can often begin the exams before finishing the experience required for certification, depending on their approved pathway. The IIA makes the final eligibility decision.

What is the CIA Challenge Exam?

The CIA Challenge Exam is a one-exam pathway for eligible accounting-credential holders, active CISA holders and certain experienced professionals under current IIA routes. Eligibility must be approved by The IIA.

Does EduDelphi provide corporate CIA training?

Yes. Employers can request private cohorts, multi-location scheduling, live virtual delivery, arranged onsite training, employer invoicing and purchase-order support.

How do I maintain CIA certification after passing?

Practicing CIA holders currently need 40 CPE hours each year, including at least two ethics hours, and must complete annual certification renewal through The IIA’s CCMS. The current renewal period runs from October 1 through December 31. Review The IIA’s certification renewal guidance before reporting.

Does CIA certification guarantee a job or salary increase?

No. CIA can strengthen professional knowledge and demonstrate structured development, but employment and compensation depend on experience, role, industry, location and employer requirements.
