What Is the CIA Qualification?

CIA stands for Certified Internal Auditor. It is The IIA’s global professional designation for internal-audit practitioners and follows a three-part examination route covering audit fundamentals, engagements and internal-audit-function knowledge.

For South Africa candidates, the CIA is registered as a professional designation through IIA SA and SAQA. It is not a generic internal-auditor or ISO-awareness course.

Who Is CIA Best Suited For?

CIA is a focused internal-audit credential, not a substitute for every finance or technology qualification. It is strongest when your work centres on assurance, governance, risk, controls or audit leadership.

01 · Internal audit

Audit professionals building depth

Useful for internal auditors and external auditors moving toward risk-based audit planning, evidence, findings and follow-up.

02 · Risk & controls

Professionals close to control decisions

Useful when you work in risk management, compliance, internal controls, governance, quality assurance or assurance functions.

03 · Audit leadership

Professionals shaping assurance capability

Useful for senior practitioners who need a stronger audit-methodology and governance framework alongside workplace experience.

When another route may fit better: choose CISA for IT audit and information-systems controls, CFE for fraud examination, and CA(SA), ACCA or CPA for broader accounting, reporting or external-audit direction.

Official route and eligibility

CIA Eligibility in South Africa: Education, Experience & IIA Membership

The IIA determines eligibility. Candidates can generally sit the traditional CIA exams before completing the relevant experience requirement, but certification is granted only after all applicable requirements are met.

1

Check the right entry route

Master’s-degree candidates generally require one year of qualifying experience; bachelor’s-degree candidates generally require two. Active IAP and no-degree pathways have separate current requirements.

2

Apply through CCMS

Provide the official documentation, complete the IIA/IIA SA membership requirements that apply to candidates in South Africa, and await approval.

3

Plan and pass the three parts

The IIA provides three years from programme acceptance to complete the CIA requirements. Exam parts may be taken in the order that best suits your background and study plan.

4

Complete experience and maintain status

IIA SA and Global IIA requirements apply to active CIA status in South Africa after certification.

Case-based learning

Learn CIA Concepts Through Audit Decisions, Not Theory Alone

EduDelphi uses practical case-based discussion alongside core CIA preparation. Learners build better judgement when they have to decide what evidence is sufficient, which control weakness matters and how a finding should be escalated.

Example: vendor and payment-control red flags

An audit team identifies split purchase orders, a repeated supplier-bank-account change and weak approval evidence. The task is not to jump to a conclusion. It is to evaluate the evidence, identify the control risk, plan the next procedure and decide how the issue should be communicated.

How CIA Knowledge Fits South Africa’s Governance and Assurance Environment

The CIA provides a global internal-audit framework. In South Africa, professionals also operate within local governance, reporting, public-sector and organisation-specific requirements. The qualification does not replace legal advice, King IV expertise or internal policies; it strengthens the audit, risk and controls capability used alongside them.

Internal audit & assurance
Governance & board reporting
Risk & internal controls
Financial-services assurance
Public-sector accountability
Technology and data-risk audit

South Africa-time live-online delivery is suitable for candidates in Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha and elsewhere in the country. Classroom and corporate arrangements can be discussed according to the active batch and team requirements.

EduDelphi prepares candidates for The IIA’s Certified Internal Auditor route. The IIA separately controls eligibility, CCMS, official fees, examination, certification and maintenance requirements.

Is CIA recognised in South Africa?

Yes. The CIA is registered by SAQA as a professional designation through IIA SA. Candidates should also understand the local IIA SA membership and maintenance conditions that apply to active designation status.

How many CIA exam parts are there?

The traditional CIA route has three parts: Internal Audit Fundamentals, Internal Audit Engagement and Internal Audit Function.

Part 1 has 125 questions and a 150-minute time limit. Parts 2 and 3 each have 100 questions and a 120-minute time limit, subject to current IIA policy.

Can I take CIA exams before completing experience?

Eligible candidates can generally sit the traditional CIA exams before completing the applicable experience requirement. The credential is issued only once all official requirements are met.

The IIA currently provides three years from programme acceptance to complete the requirements. An individual exam registration is generally valid for 180 days, subject to current IIA policy.
