Updated for the 2026 CIA Challenge Exam

One Unified CIA Challenge Exam Since June 1, 2026

Beginning June 1, 2026, The IIA moved the CIA Challenge Exam to one unified syllabus and examination for all three eligibility pathways. The updated exam is aligned with the 2024 Global Internal Audit Standards.

CPA / CA pathway

Applications are currently open year-round for eligible active members of approved accounting bodies.

Active CISA pathway

Applications are currently open year-round for eligible active CISA holders.

10+ years professional pilot

The 2026 experienced-professional pilot accepts applications through September 30, 2026.

One Exam. Three Eligibility Pathways.

What Is the CIA Challenge Exam?

The CIA Challenge Exam is a one-part examination route to the Certified Internal Auditor designation for qualified accounting, information-systems and experienced internal-audit professionals. It is different from the standard three-part CIA route.

Since June 1, 2026, the accounting, CISA and experienced-professional pathways use the same unified Challenge Exam syllabus and examination aligned with the 2024 Global Internal Audit Standards.

The current programme is aligned to the Global Internal Audit Standards. It gives eligible candidates one comprehensive examination; it does not remove The IIA’s own qualification checks or certification requirements.

Challenge Exam or standard CIA?

Choose the Challenge route only when you meet an official pathway. If you do not, use the global CIA course for Parts 1, 2 and 3 instead.

  • Qualified accounting-body members
  • Active CISA holders
  • Eligible 10+ years experienced-professional pilot candidates

Official decision boundary: EduDelphi can explain the preparation route and help you plan your study. The IIA makes the final decision on Challenge Exam eligibility, application acceptance, exam registration and certification.

Learning through practical audit cases

Use Case Studies to Practise Audit Judgement

The course uses practical scenarios to help candidates move from standard-level knowledge to the decisions an internal auditor needs to make.

Example: an audit team finds several vendors with overlapping contact details, invoices close to approval limits and unusual month-end payment patterns. Learners practise structuring an evidence-first response, considering vendor-master data, approval history, supporting records, control overrides and the appropriate next step before drawing conclusions.
