For accounting and CISA candidates, the recurring months are February, June, September and November. Exact dates, times and seats depend on Pearson VUE availability. A testing month does not guarantee an appointment at your preferred center.

Start with a window that leaves enough preparation time. Use the current CIA Challenge Exam syllabus to judge the coverage you need before selecting your target.

Accounting and CISA Applications Are Open Year-Round

The IIA accepts applications throughout the year for eligible accounting professionals and active CISA holders. Year-round applications give you flexibility, but you must receive approval before registering for the exam. An application submitted close to a testing window does not guarantee approval or an available appointment in that month. CISA candidates can follow the CISA-holder eligibility and application checklist before choosing a window. Accounting-qualified candidates can check the CPA and CA application requirements before selecting their target month.

There is no single global application cutoff for every November or February appointment. Check your route, complete the required documents and allow time for review. The IIA determines approval.

The Professional Pilot Is Closed to New Applications

The pilot application period ended on 30 September 2026. The IIA now lists November 2026 and February 2027 as remaining pilot testing windows. It states that only candidates who applied by the September deadline can register for November, and that first attempts are currently required by the end of February 2027.

The pilot remains under evaluation for possible continuation in 2027. The IIA says another update will be provided by the end of 2026. A February testing window does not mean new pilot applications have reopened. Read the current professional-pilot instructions.

Mainland China Has a Separate Published Calendar

The IIA’s current route pages list registration from 1 to 20 October 2026, scheduling from 1 to 8 November and a 6 December 2026 examination at 9am China Standard Time for the local December window. Follow the instructions for your approved route and local delivery. Do not use the general November timetable to plan this sitting. Check the Mainland China schedule.

How to Apply, Register and Schedule Your Exam

The IIA’s Certification Candidate Management System, or CCMS, manages your application and examination record. Application approval, exam registration and appointment booking are separate steps.

  1. Apply through CCMS. Select the correct Challenge pathway, pay the application fee and submit its required documents.
  2. Receive approval. Resolve any document requests before registering for the examination.
  3. Register and pay for the exam. In CCMS, use Manage My Program and complete the exam-registration process.
  4. Book through Access Pearson VUE. Choose an available center, date and time within an offered testing window.
  5. Check the confirmation. Save your appointment details and compare the sitting date with your authorization expiry.

After your application payment is processed, the current handbook gives you 90 days to complete the application process. That is a document/application deadline, separate from exam authorization. The IIA candidate handbook explains the sequence.

CIA Challenge exams are delivered at authorized Pearson VUE test centers. For identification, arrival times and testing-room rules, use our Pearson VUE scheduling and test-day guide.

How the 180-Day Exam Authorization Works

Once you purchase/register for the Challenge Exam in CCMS, the exam authorization is valid for 180 days or until the certification-program expiration date, whichever comes first. You must schedule and sit within that period and within an offered testing window.

The accounting and CISA route FAQs separately describe a three-year program eligibility period. That longer period does not keep an individual exam registration valid for three years. Professional-pilot candidates must also satisfy the current first-attempt deadline.

Planning example

If your CCMS authorization expires on 15 February 2027, a 20 February appointment falls outside it, even though February is a testing month. Select an available earlier date or resolve the registration issue through the official process before paying for another appointment.

Challenge program and exam extensions are unavailable. Canceling an appointment also does not extend the 180-day registration period. Check the actual expiry shown in CCMS before committing to a window. The IIA’s Challenge registration FAQ confirms these restrictions.

Before buying registration, compare your target window with your preparation progress, likely seat availability and the program expiry. For application fees, exam registration and other budget items, see our CIA certification cost guide.

When Are CIA Challenge Exam Results Released?

For CIA Challenge examinations taken from 1 September 2026, official results are issued within three weeks of the examination date. You receive a system-generated email when the result is available. The current process does not provide the immediate unofficial result used previously. The IIA’s scoring guidance confirms the timetable.

Check your CCMS examination record and linked Pearson VUE account area when notified. Keep your profile email current. If three weeks have passed without a result, open a case through CCMS rather than relying on another candidate’s release date.

The published timeline runs from your exam date. It does not promise a fixed Friday release or one shared release date for the entire November window.

Why Do Older Pages Say Eight Weeks?

The June 2026 relaunch window supported data collection for the updated examination. The IIA’s April 2026 announcement gave those candidates an eight-week result timeline. The current rule from September is within three weeks.

Receiving a passing result and receiving the final credential confirmation are separate events. Follow the completion notices in CCMS after all program requirements have been satisfied.

After you successfully complete the program and any remaining requirements, The IIA’s Challenge certification FAQ says the CIA designation will normally appear on your account within 7–14 business days.

Retakes, Rescheduling and Missed Testing Windows

Under current IIA guidance, candidates must wait at least 30 days after a failed attempt before retaking the exam. A retake also requires a new registration and payment, an eligible testing window and a valid program. The next available window may be much later than day 30.

For the regular accounting and CISA Challenge pathways, The IIA currently permits up to seven retakes, or eight attempts in total, within the three-year program eligibility period. See the accounting and CISA retake FAQs.

For example, a late-November attempt may leave February as the next regular testing month. Check your route’s rules, program expiry and live appointments before making that plan. Pilot candidates should follow their current program instructions rather than assuming every future window has been announced.

The current handbook allows appointment changes until 48 hours before the appointment and lists a $75 USD fee each time you reschedule, which may be subject to local tax. Canceling a booking leaves the registration expiry unchanged. If you miss the intended window, check whether a later offered window still fits your authorization. Check the current appointment and retake rules.

CIA Challenge Exam Dates FAQs

When is the next CIA Challenge Exam window?

As of 3 October 2026, November 2026 is the next regular window for approved accounting and CISA candidates. The professional pilot also lists November 2026 and February 2027. Mainland China has a separate local timetable. Your actual appointment depends on availability and valid authorization.

Can CPA, CA, ACCA and CISA candidates apply anytime?

Active holders of credentials from The IIA’s approved accounting bodies, including ACCA and many CPA/CA bodies, and active CISA holders can currently apply year-round. Accounting-route applicants must be active members/license holders in an approved body. Students are not eligible for that Challenge pathway. Approval is required before exam registration.

Can I still apply through the 10-year professional pilot?

New pilot applications are closed. The application deadline was 30 September 2026. The IIA is evaluating possible continuation, but has not announced reopened applications on the current professional-pathway page.

Can accepted professional-pilot candidates test in February 2027?

Yes. The current IIA professional-pilot page lists February 2027 and says first attempts are required by the end of that month. The intended appointment must also fall within the candidate’s valid exam authorization.

Does the 180-day period begin at approval or registration?

The IIA’s current Challenge route FAQs describe the 180-day exam authorization as beginning once you register for the examination. Application completion and program eligibility have separate deadlines. Use the exact expiration displayed in your CCMS account.

Can I extend my CIA Challenge Exam registration?

No. The IIA states that Challenge program and examination extensions are unavailable. Canceling or rescheduling an appointment does not extend registration validity.

Are CIA Challenge Exam results immediate?

No. For examinations from 1 September 2026, the official result is issued within three weeks of the exam date, with an email notification when available. There is no guaranteed Friday or single window-wide release date.

Are CIA Challenge dates the same in every country?

The general credential-based schedule lists February, June, September and November, but local arrangements can differ. The IIA publishes a separate Mainland China timetable. Follow your route’s current instructions and the live appointments available through the approved booking process.
