CIA Certification Cost 2026: Fees, Membership, Exam and Study Costs
The official application and exam fees are only one part of a CIA budget. Membership, preparation, retakes, booking changes, taxes and annual renewal can all change the amount you spend.

How Much Does CIA Certification Cost in 2026?
A candidate who completes the traditional CIA route without a retake starts with official fees of $990 at the member schedule or $1,515 at the nonmember schedule. Those numbers cover the application and one registration for Parts 1, 2 and 3. They do not include membership dues, study resources, instruction, local taxes, currency conversion or an unexpected change to your exam plan.
The current IIA CIA page says its published pricing applies in the United States, Canada and select countries. Candidates outside North America should verify current rules, fees and taxes with their National Institute. Where payment occurs through CCMS, check the amount shown before completing the purchase. Where a National Institute administers payment locally, follow that institute’s current pricing and payment instructions.
Plan around four separate amounts: official application and examination fees, membership dues, preparation costs, and contingent or continuing costs. Mixing them together is how a seemingly clear fee table turns into a poor budget.

The current standard schedule is straightforward. The member rate applies only when your IIA membership is active at the time of purchase. The table also answers the common search for the CIA exam fee per part and separates it from the CIA application fee.

Each part is purchased separately. You can therefore spread payments across your study timeline, but a longer schedule can affect the number of membership years you need if you want every exam at the member rate.

Do CIA Exam Fees Differ by Country?
Yes. The standard USD table is not a guaranteed local checkout price in every country. National Institutes can have their own membership arrangements, payment process and applicable taxes. Exchange rates also affect the amount shown on a card or bank statement when payment is collected in USD.
Before paying, check your National Institute’s current guidance and your CCMS profile. If payment occurs through CCMS, review the final checkout screen. If your National Institute invoices or collects payment locally, use its current payment process. Stop and ask for clarification if the price does not match your approved route or membership status.

CIA student pricing is country-specific. The IIA Global pricing page currently publishes student discounts for the Internal Audit Practitioner pathway but does not show a separate student schedule for the three-part CIA. Some National Institutes do publish local CIA student pricing. For example, IIA Singapore currently lists a student-member application fee of $65 and exam fees of $245 for Part 1 and $215 each for Parts 2 and 3, before GST. That totals $740 before GST for an eligible student member. Verify your eligibility and current National Institute or CCMS price before paying.

Standard IIA schedule
$990 for a member or $1,515 for a nonmember for the application and three first-attempt exam registrations.
UK and Republic of Ireland
The IIA states that membership is required for CIA applicants in this market. The local institute publishes its own membership and certification arrangements.
Singapore
GST applies, and IIA Singapore currently publishes a separate CIA student-member tariff for eligible candidates.
Australia
IIA Australia membership has local AUD pricing and can include compliant certification renewal, depending on membership type.

Is IIA Membership Worth It for CIA Exam Fees?
Under the standard IIA USD schedule, the traditional member-rate total is $525 below the nonmember total. In a market where membership is optional, compare that $525 with every membership cost incurred while making your purchases, including annual dues, a joining fee and tax. Countries with local schedules or mandatory membership require a separate calculation.
The standard Challenge Exam difference is $630 across the application and first exam registration. Compare that with your actual local membership costs rather than assuming membership always produces the same saving.

The current Challenge schedule is $150 for a member application and $845 for the exam. Nonmember prices are $380 and $1,245. Eligibility decides whether you can use this route. The IIA publishes separate Challenge pathways for approved accounting credential holders and active CISA holders, together with any time-limited professional pilot pathways that may currently be open.

A retake changes more than the exam line. It can extend your study subscription, push purchases into another membership year and delay employer reimbursement. Budget the timeline as well as the registration fee.

How Much Should You Budget for CIA Preparation?
The correct preparation budget depends on how much teaching, question practice and feedback you need. The official syllabus and candidate documents are free. Books, digital review systems, question banks, mocks, live instruction and faculty support are separate purchases.
When I review a candidate’s plan, I look for duplication first. Buying two large review systems rarely fixes weak study habits. A well-chosen route with a clear schedule, enough original practice and technical support is usually a cleaner use of the budget.

What Can a Complete CIA Budget Look Like?
These examples use the standard published USD schedule. Membership dues, taxes and preparation are deliberately shown as separate inputs.
Traditional member route
Application and all three exams cost $990. Add the membership dues required during the purchasing period, preparation and any taxes.
Traditional nonmember route
This is the best-case official application and exam total before preparation, tax or an administrative event.
Member route with one Part 1 retake
$990 for the first application/exam cycle plus $310 for a second Part 1 registration.
Member Challenge route
$150 application plus $845 for one exam. Eligibility, testing windows and the absence of extensions still matter.
A candidate who adds $800 of preparation and one $75 appointment change to the $1,515 nonmember traditional route would estimate $2,390 before tax. That is a planning example, not an EduDelphi fee quotation.

What Does CIA Certification Cost to Maintain?
Practicing CIA holders currently complete 40 CPE hours each year, including at least 2 ethics CPE hours. Nonpracticing CIA holders complete 20 CPE hours annually. Renewal and CPE are continuing certification requirements rather than part of the initial cost of earning the CIA.

These are The IIA’s current standard renewal prices. Local National Institute rules can differ. The IIA also states that annual certification renewal fees are included for North American members with active designations.
CPE itself does not necessarily require a large purchase. Qualifying education and other approved professional activities may contribute. Certification holders are responsible for confirming that an activity meets the current IIA CPE rules.

Can Your Employer Pay for CIA Certification?
Employer reimbursement policies vary. If your employer provides professional-development or certification support, ask whether exam fees, membership and preparation are separate reimbursement categories and whether payment occurs upfront or only after attendance, an exam attempt or certification. Keep official receipts separate from the training invoice so the finance team can see what each payment covers.

How to Avoid Paying More Than Necessary
- Confirm the correct route before paying. The traditional CIA, IAP progression and Challenge pathways do not have the same purchases.
- Check your local price. Use your National Institute and CCMS rather than an old fee table copied across provider websites.
- Set an exam timeline. This shows how many membership years and how long a study subscription may be needed.
- Buy one coherent preparation route. Add another product only when it solves a specific gap.
- Schedule carefully. A $75 appointment change is avoidable when work and travel commitments are checked first.
- Keep a modest contingency. One unexpected change should not stop the next exam registration.
