IAP-to-CIA pathway

Does IAP Give You a CIA Part 1 Waiver?

Yes. An active Internal Audit Practitioner (IAP) designation gives you a Part 1 waiver when you enter The IIA’s CIA program through that pathway. You still need to pass CIA Parts 2 and 3 and satisfy the applicable experience and program requirements. IAP is a separate credential that you can start without a university degree or prior work experience.

Check your active designation and the pathway shown in your CCMS account before purchasing the remaining examinations. The IIA’s CIA eligibility guidance sets the requirements.

If you’re starting an internal-audit career, IAP lets you earn recognition for your understanding of the profession’s foundations. If you already hold it, your next decision is how to plan the remaining CIA requirements.

The practical distinction is between taking the exams and being awarded CIA. Plan both stages before opening a new program. For a broader introduction, see what CIA certification means.

What Is the Internal Audit Practitioner Designation?

Internal Audit Practitioner is The IIA’s foundation-level designation for students, early-career auditors and professionals entering internal audit. It assesses the knowledge covered by CIA Part 1: Internal Audit Fundamentals. For entry eligibility, the exam and career fit, see our Internal Audit Practitioner overview.

You can pursue IAP as a credential in its own right while building experience. It also provides an entry pathway into CIA for people who do not yet have a qualifying university degree. The designation is now permanent, with ongoing renewal requirements to keep it active. See The IIA’s IAP overview.

IAP and CIA represent different stages of professional recognition. CIA assesses engagement work and the internal audit function as well as the foundations tested in Part 1.

IAP vs CIA: the practical difference
Question IAP CIA
What does it assess? Internal-audit fundamentals Fundamentals, engagement work and the internal audit function
How many examinations? One: the CIA Part 1 exam Normally three parts. Active IAP holders receive a Part 1 waiver.
Experience needed for the award? No prior experience requirement Qualifying experience according to the entry route
Program completion period? Two years after approval Three years after approval

This comparison describes the traditional CIA pathway. Separate Challenge Exam pathways have their own eligibility rules.

Who Can Apply for IAP?

You can start IAP without a degree or previous work experience. This makes it accessible to university students, career changers and professionals whose audit experience is still developing.

The application requires valid government-issued photo identification and completion of The IIA’s approval process. Use the name that matches your identification when setting up your Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS) profile.

After The IIA processes the application payment, you have 90 days to complete the application steps. Once approved, you have two years to complete the IAP program. These are different deadlines. Follow the Certification Candidate Handbook and the dates in your account.

Already Eligible for Direct CIA Entry?

You can choose direct CIA entry if you meet its application requirements. IAP is optional. It can provide an earlier credential while you build your career, but compare the separate application costs and your preferred study path before adding that stage.

How Does the IAP Exam Relate to CIA Part 1?

The IAP examination is CIA Part 1. It contains 125 multiple-choice questions and allows 150 minutes. Preparation therefore follows the current Part 1 blueprint rather than an older, separate IAP outline.

Our IAP preparation and materials guide helps you plan that first examination.

Study the responsibilities of internal audit, ethics, independence, governance, risk and controls. In practice questions, pay close attention to who is responsible for a decision and whether the proposed action protects the auditor’s objectivity.

A passing scaled score is 600. That does not mean answering 80% of questions correctly. Scaled scoring accounts for differences between examination forms, as explained in The IIA’s Candidate Handbook.

Foundations of Internal Auditing 35%
Ethics and Professionalism 20%
Governance, Risk Management and Control 30%
Fraud Risks 15%

How to Move from IAP to CIA

Use your active IAP designation as the basis for the CIA entry pathway, then plan the remaining examinations and experience. Keep the same CCMS account so your certification history stays together.

  1. Check Your IAP Is Active

Confirm the designation and renewal record in your account. If your certification is inactive, resolve that status before relying on the active-IAP pathway.

  2. Review Your Degree and Experience

Record the education you hold, the dates of relevant employment and the responsibilities you performed. This establishes what remains before the CIA award.

  3. Submit the Separate CIA Application

IAP does not automatically enroll you in CIA. Follow the current application instructions and pay the applicable CIA application fee.

  4. Confirm the Part 1 Waiver

Check that your approved CIA program shows the waiver before buying an exam registration. If the record is unclear, ask CCMS Help to confirm how your IAP applies.

  5. Pass Parts 2 and 3 and Complete the Exit Requirements

Prepare for Internal Audit Engagement and Internal Audit Function. You must also complete the required experience verification and other program requirements within your CIA eligibility period.

Your active credential is the starting point for the waiver. For an older IAP record or an unusual account history, obtain confirmation from The IIA about your actual eligibility before payment. The current central guidance is the CIA pathway page.

What Experience Is Still Required After IAP?

The Part 1 waiver changes the examination path. The CIA experience requirement remains. A qualifying degree can reduce the experience needed by an active IAP holder.

Experience required before the CIA designation is awarded
Your education / pathway Qualifying experience
Master’s degree or equivalent 1 year
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent 2 years
Active IAP without a qualifying degree 5 years, including 2 years within the previous 3 years

The IIA’s eligibility guidance recognizes experience in internal audit and related work, including external audit, risk management, compliance, quality assurance, internal controls and other audit or assessment disciplines.

Your responsibilities matter. A compliance analyst who evaluates controls may have relevant work to document even when their job title does not say Internal Auditor. Enter the dates and duties accurately and follow the verification workflow in CCMS.

You can take CIA examinations before completing the required experience. The designation is awarded after all applicable requirements are satisfied. For the wider route and document requirements, see our CIA certification requirements guide.

When Should You Apply for CIA After IAP?

Apply when the remaining experience and examinations fit within the CIA program deadline. The traditional CIA program gives you three years from approval to finish its requirements.

Check the experience you already have before starting that clock. A university qualification earned later can also change your experience requirement, so include your education plans in the discussion.

EduDelphi’s advisors can review your starting point and help plan an appropriate enrollment timeline. The IIA confirms the pathway and evidence accepted.

No Degree and No Qualifying Experience Yet?

You can begin IAP now. However, entering a three-year CIA program immediately would not give you enough time to accumulate five years of experience from zero. Build relevant experience and plan your CIA application date around the remaining requirement, or review how a future qualifying degree would change it.

A Degree Holder’s Planning Example

A hypothetical bachelor’s-degree holder has passed IAP and already completed one year of qualifying work. Their CIA experience requirement is two years. They can plan Parts 2 and 3 while completing the remaining experience, provided all requirements fit within their approved program period.

This is an illustrative planning example, not a learner case or an approval guarantee.

IAP Fees and Remaining CIA Costs

Budget for IAP and CIA as separate programs. The table below uses The IIA’s standard published USD application and examination fees. It excludes preparation, membership dues, taxes and additional attempts.

Standard IAP application and first exam registration, USD
Item Member Nonmember Eligible student
Application $120 $240 $45
Exam registration $310 $445 $165
Initial official total $430 $685 $210

These totals are calculated from The IIA’s IAP fee schedule.

The standard student rate is for final-year bachelor’s students or graduate students enrolled in at least six semester hours or equivalent; verify the current criteria before selecting it.

Outside North America, check your National Institute’s prices and taxes rather than assuming the central schedule is your local invoice. IIA membership is optional for IAP in most markets, but The IIA’s current IAP FAQ requires it for candidates residing in the UK/Republic of Ireland, South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho.

What Will You Still Pay After IAP?

Under the standard schedule, the CIA application plus first registrations for Parts 2 and 3 total $680 at member rates ($120 + $280 + $280), or $1,070 at nonmember rates ($240 + $415 + $415). These are future CIA payments, separate from the IAP costs already incurred.

Verify the current official pricing and your local payment process before purchase. Fees already paid are subject to The IIA’s non-refundable and non-transferable terms.

Your EduDelphi preparation quotation states the teaching and resources included. Official application and exam fees remain separate. Our CIA certification cost guide covers membership, preparation and other budgeting considerations.

How to Keep Your IAP Active

IAP is a permanent designation with ongoing renewal requirements. Keeping it active matters when you want to use the active-IAP pathway into CIA.

The current annual policy requires 20 CPE hours for practicing IAP holders and 10 for nonpracticing holders, including two ethics hours. Formally retired holders are exempt while retired. Newly certified holders have a special initial renewal period.

Follow The IIA’s Annual Certification Renewal Policy and your applicable institute’s instructions. After earning CIA, review the separate CIA CPE and renewal requirements.

IAP-to-CIA Frequently Asked Questions

Is IAP the same as CIA?

No. IAP assesses internal-audit fundamentals through the CIA Part 1 examination. CIA covers engagement work and the internal audit function as well, and requires qualifying experience before the designation is awarded.

Can I start IAP without a degree?

Yes. IAP has no degree or prior work-experience requirement. Active IAP can then provide an entry pathway into CIA, where the applicable experience requirement still needs to be satisfied.

Does IAP waive CIA Part 1?

Yes. The current CIA entry guidance provides a Part 1 waiver for active IAP holders. Use your existing CCMS profile and confirm the waiver in the approved CIA program before buying exam registrations.

Can I take Parts 2 and 3 before completing my experience?

Yes. You can sit the examinations before completing experience. You must meet all applicable program requirements within the CIA eligibility period before receiving the designation, so plan the application date and experience timeline together.

Does IAP remove the five-year experience requirement?

No. Active IAP holders without a qualifying degree need five years of relevant experience, including two within the previous three years. A qualifying bachelor’s or master’s degree changes the requirement to two or one year respectively.

If I already passed CIA Part 1, do I automatically hold IAP?

No. The IIA’s current IAP FAQ describes a separate IAP application using the same CCMS profile and an official review process for eligible existing CIA candidates. Ask CCMS Help about your record rather than assuming the designation has already been awarded.

Does the IAP designation expire?

IAP is now a permanent designation. You must still meet the applicable renewal requirements to maintain active standing. Permanent recognition does not remove CPE and renewal obligations.

Should I take IAP if I already qualify for direct CIA entry?

IAP is optional. It can provide an earlier credential, but direct CIA entry may fit your plans better if you want to proceed through the full program. Compare the separate application costs, desired milestones and remaining experience before deciding.

Eligibility and application answers follow The IIA’s current IAP guidance and CIA pathway requirements.
