CIA Exam at Pearson VUE: Scheduling, Test-Day Rules and Results
CIA exams are delivered at authorized Pearson VUE test centers. After The IIA approves your CIA program application, register for the exam in CCMS and manage your Pearson VUE appointment from there. A standard CIA exam registration is valid for 180 days or until your certification program expires, whichever comes first. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment. For three-part CIA exams taken from April 1, 2026, and CIA Challenge Exams taken from September 1, 2026, The IIA issues the official result within three weeks.

Four CIA Exam Rules to Know Before You Book
Several preventable issues can stop or disrupt admission before the exam begins: a name mismatch, unacceptable identification, late arrival, the wrong test-center location or a missed appointment-change deadline. Check these items while you still have time to resolve them.

Current delivery and results
What Changed for CIA Candidates in 2025 and 2026?
Two old pieces of advice now cause confusion. First, the CIA exam is no longer available through at-home online proctoring. The IIA ended online testing in May 2025, so candidates now sit at authorized Pearson VUE test centers. Second, three-part CIA candidates who test from April 1, 2026 no longer receive an immediate unofficial result. The IIA sends one official result within three weeks.
The same delayed-result process applies to CIA Challenge Exam appointments from September 1, 2026. Older articles, forum posts and videos may still describe remote testing or an immediate pass/fail screen. Do not plan from them.
Current 2026 position: CIA exams are delivered at Pearson VUE test centers rather than through at-home online proctoring. For appointments covered by the effective dates above, The IIA issues the official result within three weeks. The earliest retake of a failed exam part remains 30 days after the previous attempt.

What You Need Before You Can Schedule the CIA Exam
Your CIA application must be approved before you can register for an exam. Once approved, use CCMS to choose the part, register and pay. The Pearson VUE scheduling link becomes available through your CCMS record.
- An approved CIA program application in CCMS
- The correct exam part or approved Challenge pathway
- Your legal name entered accurately in CCMS
- An acceptable, current government-issued photo ID whose name matches your CCMS candidate record
- A realistic exam date within the authorization period
Approval, exam registration and appointment scheduling are separate actions. Paying for an exam registration does not reserve a seat. You still need to choose a test center, date and time through Pearson VUE.

How to Schedule a CIA Exam at Pearson VUE
Open your approved CIA program and select Manage My Program.
Choose the relevant exam and use Register and pay to complete the official exam registration.
Use Manage Appointment or Access Pearson VUE where shown in CCMS. This connects the booking to the correct candidate record.
Compare available locations and appointments. Check the journey, building access, parking and public-transport details before confirming.
Check the exam name, date, time, center address and spelling of your name in the Pearson VUE confirmation.
Test-center inventory changes as candidates book and reschedule. A center that appears today may have no suitable seat next week. Book once your study plan is stable enough to support a real date.

How Long Is a CIA Exam Registration Valid?
A standard CIA exam registration is valid for 180 days or until the certification program expires, whichever happens first. Your appointment must fall inside that period. Canceling an appointment does not pause or extend the authorization.

Do not count 180 days from the day you hope to test. Count from the exam registration date shown in CCMS, then check whether your program expires sooner.
Exam delivery
Can You Take the CIA Exam Online at Home?
No. CIA exams are currently delivered at authorized Pearson VUE test centers. The IIA discontinued at-home online proctoring in May 2025. Older articles, videos and forum discussions may still describe remote testing, but candidates should follow the current Candidate Handbook and their live appointment instructions.
You may use online systems to apply, register, schedule and view results. The examination itself takes place at a test center.
Changing an appointment
How to Reschedule or Cancel a CIA Exam
Use CCMS to access Pearson VUE and manage the appointment. Under the current standard global rules, a US$75 fee plus applicable local tax applies each time you reschedule. Changes are allowed until 48 hours before the scheduled appointment. A cancellation removes the seat but does not extend the exam registration period. Mainland China follows separate timing and fee rules.

Exam fees are non-refundable under the current Candidate Handbook. If work, travel or family plans are uncertain, avoid booking the last date in your authorization. A small buffer can save an entire exam fee.
The day before your exam
CIA Exam-Day Checklist
- Open the Pearson VUE confirmation and verify the test-center address.
- Check the appointment time and your planned arrival time.
- Confirm that you have an acceptable, current government-issued photo ID whose name matches your CCMS candidate record.
- Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early.
- Check the route, traffic, parking and building-entry instructions.
- Leave study notes, calculators, watches and other restricted items outside the testing room.
- Eat beforehand because food and drink are not allowed in the room.
- Read the latest appointment email again if the center has added local instructions.
Do a name check now. Compare the ID, CCMS profile and Pearson VUE confirmation character by character. A familiar short name, missing surname or spelling difference can become an admission problem.
Identification and arrival
What ID Do You Need for the CIA Exam?
Bring an acceptable, current government-issued photo ID. The name must match your CCMS candidate record and Pearson VUE appointment. The IIA lists documents such as a passport, driver’s license and military ID among the accepted examples.
Bring the original physical document and follow the exact instructions in your confirmation email. A screenshot, photocopy or digital image is not a substitute. If your document or local identification format is unusual, confirm acceptance with Pearson VUE before exam day.
If your legal name has changed, update the candidate record before exam day. Test-center staff cannot rewrite your CCMS profile at the desk.

What happens at the center
The Pearson VUE Check-In Process
Arrive at least 30 minutes before the appointment. Staff check your identification, confirm the candidate record, explain the center rules and direct you to store personal items. Security procedures can include a digital photograph, signature, palm-vein scan or other checks used at that center.
The exam administrator confirms that the correct examination is loaded. At the workstation, you complete the welcome screens, nondisclosure agreement and other terms before the exam begins. These initial screens sit outside the examination time, but they have their own response limits. Review The IIA’s computer-based testing tutorial before exam day rather than expecting a separate tutorial at the center.
If you arrive fewer than 30 minutes before the appointment, you may be denied access. If you arrive after the scheduled appointment time, you will not be admitted and will be treated as a no-show.
If the ID is invalid or the name does not match, the center may refuse admission and the registration fee may be lost.
Inside the testing room
Calculators, Notes, Personal Items and Breaks

If you experience a workstation or exam-delivery problem, report it immediately to the exam administrator and ask the proctor to log a case. Test-center staff can address technical or delivery problems, but they cannot explain examination questions or interpret your score.
Request support before booking
How to Request CIA Testing Accommodations
Request testing accommodations as early as possible through The IIA’s official accommodations process. Candidates can identify an accommodation need during the certification-program application, and The IIA’s current Special Accommodations process requires approval before the accommodated examination is scheduled.
Once the request is approved, follow The IIA’s instructions for registering and scheduling the approved Pearson VUE appointment. If an appointment has already been booked before the accommodation is attached, it may need to be canceled and rescheduled. Some test-center modifications can require 30 days or more to arrange.
Best practice: start the accommodation process early, receive approval and scheduling instructions, then book the appropriate Pearson VUE appointment. Do not assume the test center can add extra time or another accommodation when you arrive.

Current 2026 result process
CIA Exam Results in 2026: No Immediate Score
For three-part CIA examinations taken from April 1, 2026, candidates no longer receive the immediate unofficial result used under the previous process. The IIA issues the official result within three weeks after its post-exam quality-assurance and security checks.
For CIA Challenge Exam appointments from September 1, 2026, the same three-week official-result timeline applies.

Where Do You See Your CIA Exam Result?
When the result is ready, the examination record is updated through The IIA’s certification system and an email notification is issued. You can access the score report through CCMS and the linked Pearson VUE account area.
Will I See My Numeric CIA Score?
If you pass, the score report shows Pass rather than a numeric score. If you do not pass, the report includes your numeric scaled score and identifies syllabus domains where improvement is needed.
The CIA reporting scale runs from 250 to 750, and a scaled score of 600 or higher is required to pass. A score of 600 is not equivalent to 80% correct. The IIA converts raw examination performance to a scaled reporting score, so there is no single published number or percentage of correct answers that guarantees a passing result.

After an unsuccessful attempt
When Can You Retake a CIA Exam?
You must wait at least 30 days after an unsuccessful attempt before retaking the same exam part. The IIA allows up to eight attempts per exam part during a certification program, subject to the program deadline and current registration rules.
Use the result as a diagnostic. Return to the weaker syllabus areas, review the reasoning behind missed questions and complete timed practice before booking another date. Repeating the same reading plan rarely changes the outcome.

The last 24 hours should be quiet. Review concise notes, confirm the appointment, prepare the ID and sleep. A late attempt to relearn a large domain usually adds stress without improving recall.
