What is the CIA course?

The Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) is The IIA’s global professional certification for internal audit. EduDelphi’s Australian CIA course prepares candidates for the official examinations; The IIA determines eligibility, administers the certification programme and awards the CIA designation.

This is preparation for the three-part IIA CIA examination—not a one-day ISO internal-auditor certificate.

Separate preparation route

CIA Challenge Exam for CPA Australia, CA ANZ, CISA & Experienced Auditors

Eligible professionals may be able to earn the CIA through a one-part Challenge Exam instead of the traditional three-part route. EduDelphi offers separate Challenge Exam preparation.

CPA Australia and CA ANZ

CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand are on The IIA’s approved accounting-body list. Active status and good standing remain essential.

Qualified CISA holders

Eligible active CISA holders can review The IIA’s dedicated information-systems Challenge Exam pathway.

10+ years of experience

The IIA’s 2026 Professional Challenge pilot is for professionals with at least ten years of internal-audit or related experience.

One exam: 150 questions in 180 minutes

The unified Challenge Exam is aligned with the current Global Internal Audit Standards. It is not an exemption from assessment, and eligibility must be confirmed by The IIA. Accounting Challenge registrations use the published February, June, September and November testing windows.

2026 Professional Challenge pilot: Applications for the 10+ years experience pathway are open from 1 April to 30 September 2026. This time-limited pilot is separate from the year-round CPA/CA and CISA Challenge pathways.

CIA Syllabus 2026: Parts, Domains and Exam Weightings

Australian candidates taking the examination in English are tested on The IIA’s 2025 syllabus, which remains the current syllabus in 2026 and aligns the CIA with the Global Internal Audit Standards.

Is the 2019 CIA syllabus still current?

Not for English-language CIA candidates. Australian candidates taking the exam in English use the 2025 CIA syllabus. It is aligned with the Global Internal Audit Standards and substantially reorganised all three parts compared with older study materials.

Before purchasing any resource, confirm that it is explicitly aligned to the 2025 CIA syllabus.

Application, testing and fees

How the CIA Exam Works in Australia

Computer-based testing

CIA exams are delivered at authorised Pearson VUE test centres; at-home online proctoring is no longer the standard delivery route.

You may take Parts 1, 2 and 3 in any order. Check Pearson VUE directly for live local availability before committing to an exam date.

Scoring and results

The passing benchmark is a scaled score of 600 out of 750. For the traditional three-part CIA, candidates sitting from 1 April 2026 receive one official result within three weeks of the exam date rather than an immediate unofficial score.

The same delayed-results model applies to the CIA Challenge Exam from 1 September 2026. EduDelphi helps you plan and prepare; The IIA and Pearson VUE control examination policies and delivery.

IIA Global published fee guide

Official charge IIA member Non-member
Application US$120 US$240
Part 1 US$310 US$445
Part 2 US$280 US$415
Part 3 US$280 US$415
Application + all three parts US$990 US$1,515

These are The IIA’s published global USD fees. Outside North America, candidates should confirm current pricing and applicable taxes with the relevant National Institute before applying. Membership dues, rescheduling, retakes, extensions, study materials and EduDelphi tuition are separate.

Recommended study route

Recommended CIA Study Plan: Around 8–12 Weeks per Part

We normally recommend allowing around 8–12 weeks for each CIA part. Experienced candidates may move faster, while candidates balancing demanding work schedules may need longer.

Weeks 1–4: Learn the Part

Use the first phase to complete the core teaching and Gleim study material for that CIA part. Focus on understanding the syllabus domains properly before trying to maximise question volume.

Weeks 5–8: Practise by Domain

Work through questions topic by topic. Review every incorrect answer and return to weaker domains until your accuracy becomes more consistent.

Weeks 9–12: Complete Mocks and Final Revision

Use the final phase for timed part-wise mocks, weak-area revision and exam-strategy practice before your Pearson VUE attempt.

Need a faster plan? Your trainer can help you compress the same three phases around your target exam date and current batch. Live evening and weekend batches are also available for working professionals.

Australian practice context

How CIA Knowledge Applies in Australian Internal Audit Roles

The CIA examination is global. EduDelphi uses selected Australian examples to help candidates connect the syllabus to governance, risk, controls and assurance environments they may encounter locally.

  • Governance, risk and internal-control oversight in listed entities
  • Operational-risk and resilience context in APRA-regulated institutions, including CPS 230
  • Audit planning, evidence, findings and follow-up in public and private organisations
  • Fraud risk, cybersecurity, third-party assurance and organisational resilience
  • Communication with management, boards and audit and risk committees

Course examples support professional understanding; they do not replace organisation-specific legal, regulatory or prudential advice.

Australian employment context

Jobs and Skills Australia currently profiles approximately 6,000 people under the Internal Auditor occupation, with the largest state shares in New South Wales (38.1%), Victoria (27.4%) and Queensland (15.9%). Financial services, professional services and public administration are among the key industries.

The underlying six-digit occupation data use the ANZSCO/Census framework and are being transitioned to OSCA, so treat these figures as workforce context rather than a live vacancy count.

CIA vs CPA Australia, CA ANZ, CISA, CRMA & IAP

Pathway Best fit Primary focus Relationship to CIA
CIA Internal audit and assurance practitioners Internal audit, governance, risk and controls The credential prepared for on this page
CPA Australia / CA ANZ Accounting, reporting and finance professionals Broad accounting profession Active approved holders may qualify for the one-part Accounting CIA Challenge Exam
CISA Information-systems audit professionals IT governance, controls and assurance Qualified active holders may use the Information Systems CIA Challenge Exam
CRMA Experienced risk-assurance professionals Advanced risk management assurance A separate IIA certification
IAP Students and early-career internal auditors Internal-audit fundamentals Active IAP candidates receive a Part 1 CIA waiver under current rules
Short internal-audit course Role-specific skills Narrow practical capability Not the same as CIA certification

No pathway is universally better. Choose according to the work you want to perform, the credential you already hold and the depth of internal-audit specialisation you need.

Certified Internal Auditor Course FAQs

Is CIA recognised in Australia?

CIA is a global professional certification for internal audit issued by The IIA. Australian employers may mention CIA or equivalent professional qualifications for selected audit, assurance, risk and controls roles, but requirements vary and relevant experience remains important.

Who awards the CIA certification?

The Institute of Internal Auditors awards the CIA credential. EduDelphi provides examination preparation as an IIA Learning Partner and does not issue the CIA certification.

What are the CIA eligibility requirements?

Eligibility depends on education, an active IAP or an approved Challenge credential. A master’s degree normally requires one year of relevant experience; a bachelor’s normally requires two. An active IAP provides a Part 1 waiver, with the remaining experience requirement determined by your education. The IIA makes the final decision.

Can I start studying before completing the experience requirement?

Many candidates begin learning and sitting examinations while completing required experience, provided they meet the relevant application conditions. Confirm your exact position through the current IIA handbook and CCMS.

How many parts are in the CIA exam?

The traditional CIA pathway has three parts: Internal Audit Fundamentals, Internal Audit Engagement and Internal Audit Function. Together they contain 325 multiple-choice questions.

Can I take the CIA parts in any order?

Yes. The IIA does not require candidates to take Part 1 first. Your study sequence can reflect your background, active batch and preferred examination plan.

What is the CIA pass mark?

The passing benchmark for each part is a scaled score of 600 out of 750. This does not mean that exactly 80% of raw questions must be correct because The IIA uses scaled scoring.

How long does CIA preparation take?

EduDelphi commonly plans approximately 8–12 weeks per part. Candidates completing all three parts may spread their study over several months. The IIA generally allows three years from programme acceptance to complete the requirements.

Where can I sit the CIA exam in Australia?

Candidates schedule computer-based examinations through authorised Pearson VUE test centres. Availability depends on location and date, so check the official booking system before finalising travel or preparation plans.

Can I take the CIA exam online from home?

At-home online proctoring is no longer the standard CIA delivery route. Candidates use authorised Pearson VUE test centres, subject to the current official policy and local availability.

Are official IIA fees included in EduDelphi tuition?

No, unless a written quotation expressly says otherwise. The IIA application, membership and exam fees are separate from EduDelphi’s preparation fee.

What does EduDelphi CIA training include?

It includes live teaching, recordings, full Gleim review access, 5,000+ questions, multiple part-wise mocks, LMS notes, mind maps, infographics, revision resources, doubt solving, practical cases and application guidance.

Are evening and weekend classes available?

Yes. Evening and weekend batches are also available for working professionals, subject to the current schedule. Ask for the next AEST/AEDT-compatible options.

What is the CIA Challenge Exam?

The Challenge Exam is a one-part pathway for eligible CPA/CA, CISA and experienced-auditor candidates. CPA Australia and CA ANZ appear on The IIA’s approved accounting-body list. The examination contains 150 questions and allows 180 minutes; The IIA must confirm your route.

Is the 2019 CIA syllabus still current?

No. English-language CIA candidates in Australia use the 2025 CIA syllabus, aligned to the Global Internal Audit Standards. Confirm that every study resource you use is explicitly aligned to the 2025 syllabus.

When will I receive CIA exam results?

For the traditional three-part CIA, candidates sitting from 1 April 2026 receive one official result within three weeks of the exam date. The same delayed-result model applies to the Challenge Exam from 1 September 2026.

Does CIA guarantee a job or salary increase?

No professional certification can guarantee employment, promotion or salary. CIA can strengthen professional credibility and knowledge, while outcomes still depend on experience, sector, role, location and employer needs.

Is CIA the same as an ISO internal-auditor course?

No. CIA is The IIA’s global professional certification completed through three examinations or an eligible Challenge Exam route. An ISO internal-auditor course normally focuses on auditing a particular management-system standard.
