What is CPIM?

CPIM stands for Certified in Planning and Inventory Management. It is awarded and administered by the Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM) under its APICS certification brand. “APICS CPIM” and “ASCM CPIM” are both commonly used terms. • Study with weekend and evening batch options around your job.
  • See how the topics apply in Australian manufacturing, retail, distribution, mining and healthcare.

Who CPIM is for

Who Should Take CPIM in Australia?

This course suits people who want to feel more confident with day-to-day supply, demand and inventory decisions.

  • Demand, supply, production, materials and inventory planners.
  • Supply-chain, operations and procurement analysts moving closer to integrated planning.
  • Warehouse, distribution and logistics professionals who need stronger inventory and replenishment logic.
  • Manufacturing, retail, FMCG, mining, healthcare and 3PL professionals.
When another route may suit better: choose CPIM for internal planning and inventory decisions; choose CSCP for broader end-to-end supply-chain strategy; consider CIPS when procurement and commercial sourcing are the principal focus.

CPIM in Australia

CPIM in Australia: Practical Planning Examples

The course helps you understand the kind of planning problems that appear in real Australian workplaces.

Retail and FMCG

A Sydney distribution centre sees an 18% jump in forecast demand, but replenishment takes 11 weeks. You learn how to think about stock, service level and what to do next.

Mining and resources

A critical spare is needed only now and then, with a long import lead time. You learn why average demand alone is not enough for the right inventory decision.

Manufacturing

Demand is higher than the capacity in one work centre. You learn how S&OP, the master schedule, MRP and detailed scheduling connect.

Australian work context

Jobs and Skills Australia describes supply and distribution managers as responsible for purchasing, stock levels, storage, distribution and inventory systems across transport, warehousing, manufacturing and wholesale trade.

Study plan

CPIM Study Time: A 12–16 Week Study Plan

This is a simple guide for working learners. We can adjust it around your current knowledge and exam plan.

1

Weeks 1–4: learn the basics

Start with strategy, S&OP, demand and internal supply. Take your time to understand the main ideas.

2

Weeks 5–8: learn the next topics

Move to suppliers, inventory, detailed schedules and distribution. Do practice questions after each topic.

3

Weeks 9–12+: practise and revise

Do timed questions and mock exams. Go back to the topics that still feel difficult.

Delivery across Australia

Choose a CPIM course format that works around your role

We can discuss the learning route, cohort pacing and location based on your needs—not force every candidate into one timetable.

  • Live online: Australia-friendly batch planning with current times communicated in AEST/AEDT and practical access across states.
  • Weekend and evening: options for professionals managing a full-time workload.
  • Self-paced or one-to-one: flexibility where a scheduled cohort is not the right fit.
  • Physical and corporate: Brisbane support plus nationwide on-site or private-team delivery.

  • Timing arranged around shifts, planning cycles and operational calendars.
  • Cases and discussion shaped around the team’s operating context.
  • Enquiry-led guidance for employer-sponsored payment.

Self-studyYou already have strong planning knowledge and can independently structure your reading and question practice.Easy to postpone difficult areas or lose momentum without a study rhythm.
Compressed bootcampYou have a near-term exam target and strong foundations to build on quickly.Fast exposure is not the same as enough repetition for every candidate.
Career relevance

CPIM Careers in Australia: Roles & Employer Relevance

CPIM can help you show stronger planning and inventory knowledge. It does not guarantee a job, promotion or salary.

Do Australian employers mention CPIM? Yes. CPIM can appear as a preferred or desirable certification in selected Australian planning and supply-chain roles. It is not a licence and is not required for every planning job.

Is CPIM worth it?

Is CPIM Worth It in Australia?

CPIM is most useful when your work includes demand planning, production planning, materials, MRP, stock, scheduling or integrated supply planning.

It is less directly focused on careers where procurement, freight/logistics or broad end-to-end supply-chain strategy are the main priority. In those cases, CIPS, CLTD or CSCP may be a better first choice.

A simple decision

Choose CPIM if you want to get better at planning stock, supply, production and schedules. Choose another credential if those are not the main parts of the job you want next.
