Why ISO 9001:2026 Matters for Internal Auditors
ISO published ISO 9001:2026 on 16 September 2026. The fundamentals of internal auditing remain familiar, but the criteria being audited have changed. The new edition places stronger emphasis on leadership, quality culture and ethical behaviour, provides clearer treatment of risks and opportunities, and adds revised Annex A guidance. Internal auditors therefore need to update what they test—not simply continue using an old 2015 checklist.
For an existing QMS, the auditor’s job is to understand the relevant changes, update audit criteria and evidence trails, and identify whether revised arrangements work in practice. An existing ISO 9001:2015 organisational certificate did not become invalid on publication day; transition is managed through the organisation and its certification body.

The teaching follows the decisions an internal auditor actually makes: set criteria, follow the process, test evidence, reach a conclusion and check improvement.
Day 1Understand the QMS, Plan the Audit and Build the Evidence Trail
ISO 9001:2026 requirements as audit criteria; process approach and risk-based thinking; ISO 19011:2026 auditing principles and guidance; auditor integrity, fair presentation, due professional care, confidentiality, independence, evidence-based and risk-based auditing; first-party audit roles and impartiality; audit programme, objectives, scope and criteria; deciding what to sample; document review; process mapping; audit plan, interview prompts and checklist design.
Workshop output: a scoped audit plan, process trail, risk-informed sample and interview guide for the Oman case.
Day 2Conduct the Audit, Write Findings, Report and Verify Action
Opening meeting; interviewing and active listening; tracing records and actual practice; evaluating objective evidence; distinguishing an observation, a nonconformity and an unsupported suspicion; finding structure and fair communication; closing meeting; report writing; root-cause and corrective-action follow-up; effectiveness checks; remote and hybrid auditing: selecting appropriate methods, obtaining digital evidence, interviewing by video, reviewing virtual locations, confidentiality and access controls, technology limitations, and deciding when remote evidence is insufficient; practical assessment.
Workshop output: evidence log, reasoned conclusion, sample finding, closing summary, audit report and CAPA verification plan.
ISO 9001 Clause 9.2 — Internal Audit: audits should occur at planned intervals. The programme should take account of process importance, organisational changes and previous audit results; each audit needs clear objectives, criteria and scope; auditors must be objective and impartial; relevant management receives findings; and follow-up action is addressed appropriately.
ISO 19011:2026 versus ISO 9001:2026: ISO 9001 supplies the QMS requirements being audited. ISO 19011 supplies current guidance for managing and conducting management-system audits, including remote and hybrid methods. The course uses both for their correct purposes.
Work Through an Audit From Planning to Corrective-Action Follow-Up
An Oman engineering-services supplier has rising delivery complaints. A substitute supplier was approved verbally, receiving-inspection records are inconsistent and two corrective actions were marked closed without evidence that they solved the issue. Learners follow one customer order across procurement, operations and quality.
The question is not merely “which clause?” You must decide what to examine, whom to interview, which records are reliable and whether the evidence supports a finding.
What a defensible finding looks like
Weak statement: “Supplier controls are poor.”
Evidence-led statement: “In the sampled purchase file, the substitute supplier was used before documented evaluation or approval was available. The purchasing lead confirmed verbal approval, but the team could not produce the decision record during the audit.”
Next step: verify the applicable internal and ISO 9001 criteria before classifying the issue; agree ownership and test whether the corrective action controls future substitutions. This is an original EduDelphi example, not official ISO text or a recalled PECB question.

Why the PECB relationship matters
EduDelphi is a PECB-authorized training partner and can guide candidates who want the separate official route. PECB controls its exam, application, experience evidence and credential decision. The two-day EduDelphi core course does not certify an employer’s QMS or make a learner PECB-certified.
Credential distinction: PECB’s current full Management Systems Internal Auditor credential requires two years of professional experience, including one year in management-system implementation, operation and/or auditing, plus 200 hours of audit or assessment activity. Its provisional Internal Auditor route has no experience requirement. Check the official PECB course and certification rules before selecting that pathway.
