Practical Letters of Credit Training for Your Work

Learn how to handle a letter of credit from the first review of its terms to the presentation of documents and the next payment decision. This Singapore course connects clear explanations with sample LCs, document exercises and expert feedback.

A commercial letter of credit, also called a documentary credit, is a bank undertaking to honour a complying presentation. Payment depends on the credit’s terms and the required documents, not simply on goods arriving. Understanding that distinction helps buyers, sellers and bank teams plan their work more carefully.

Who Should Take This LC Course?

For professionals who need to understand LC terms, coordinate documents or make better decisions in a trade transaction.

Your role How the course helps
Importers, exporters and trading-company teams Review workable terms, organise documents and identify issues before shipment or presentation.
Corporate treasury and finance teams Understand payment conditions, timing, bank requirements and transaction risk.
Bank trade-operations staff and new joiners Connect the LC workflow with common document reviews, customer handoffs and escalation.
Relationship managers and commercial teams Understand what the buyer, seller and bank need from the transaction.
Shipping and logistics professionals handling LC documents Recognise how transport records, dates and document responsibilities affect presentation.

You do not need a professional trade-finance qualification to join. Basic business knowledge is helpful; clear explanations and preparatory resources support newer learners. Experienced practitioners can also enquire about focused advanced document-examination training.

What You Will Learn to Do

  • Read an LC: identify the parties, payment terms, required documents and important dates.
  • Spot workability issues: recognise terms that need clarification or amendment before the transaction progresses.
  • Plan the documents: assign responsibilities and track shipment, presentation and expiry requirements.
  • Review common presentations: apply relevant rules and practice to documents, including sets that comply.
  • Explain the next action: record an issue clearly and communicate a correction, amendment request or escalation.

Corporate document preparation and pre-checking are different from a bank’s examination responsibilities. Training makes those roles clear rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Letters of Credit Course Curriculum

Follow the transaction, then practise the decisions. UCP 600 and ISBP 821 are explained where they help you review terms and documents.

How Letters of Credit Work

Buyer, seller and bank responsibilities; issuance, advising and confirmation; sight and deferred payment; the difference between goods, documents and payment. Map a transaction and identify who needs to act at each stage.

Reviewing LC Terms

Amount, availability, shipment dates, expiry, document requirements and amendments. Review a sample LC for workability and prepare a clear request to resolve unsuitable terms.

Documents and Deadlines

Commercial invoices, transport documents, insurance documents and certificates where required. Build a checklist showing who prepares each document and which dates need coordination.

Checking Documents

Apply UCP 600 and ISBP to common presentations. Review the document’s purpose, required information and consistency. Work with both complying and flawed sets: a wording difference is not automatically a discrepancy.

Discrepancies and Amendments

Recognise common issues, explain the reason, consider correction or amendment and communicate with the appropriate party. Understand the difference between a refusal, a request for a waiver and an assumption that a problem will be accepted.

Payment and Electronic Documents

Honour, negotiation, payment timing and reimbursement context. Explore electronic presentation, eUCP and Singapore’s digital-trade environment. Identify which document and communication requirements change and which remain important.

Practical Transaction Workshop

Bring the stages together using an original trade scenario. Review terms, plan documents, examine a presentation and recommend the next action. Use trainer feedback to improve your reasoning and work.

For technical background, see ICC’s explanation of documentary-credit rules and terminology. Our teaching uses original examples and clear explanations.

Try a Practical LC Exercise

Original EduDelphi teaching example · Fictional transaction

A Singapore electronics exporter is preparing an order for an overseas buyer. Before shipment, the team compares the proposed LC with its shipping plan.

Item Proposed LC or transaction plan
Latest shipment date in the LC 18 November
Exporter’s planned shipment 20 November
Required documents Commercial invoice and the stipulated transport document
Question What should the exporter resolve before shipping?
See the Trainer’s Explanation

The planned shipment is later than the LC permits. Raise the mismatch before shipment and request workable terms through the appropriate amendment process. Check the related presentation and expiry dates too.

Do not assume that the buyer’s informal agreement changes the bank’s undertaking, or that a later discrepancy will automatically be accepted. Confirm the effective amended terms before relying on them.

A Clear Learner Response

Issue
The planned shipment falls after the LC’s latest shipment date.
Why it matters
The presentation could contain evidence of late shipment.
Next action
Request the necessary amendment, recheck connected deadlines and coordinate with the buyer, bank and shipping team.

This is the approach throughout the course: understand the transaction, identify the issue and explain the action, not just memorise a rule.

LC Skills for Singapore’s Cross-Border Trade

Singapore-based trading, treasury and bank teams often coordinate with buyers, suppliers and shipping partners across several markets. LC work brings those parties together through terms, documents and deadlines.

Our practical examples connect Singapore exporters and importers with regional supply chains, commodity trade and international banking. You consider who prepares a document, what the credit requires and when a problem needs to be raised, not just the definition of an LC.

What Changes When Trade Documents Become Electronic?

Singapore’s TradeTrust framework supports electronic trade documents, including electronic Bills of Lading. Electronic presentation changes how records are created, exchanged and handled, but it does not automatically make them compliant with an LC.

During training, compare a paper presentation with an electronic one: what does the credit permit, which records are required and how do the applicable terms and rules affect the review? Read IMDA’s TradeTrust overview.

Practical LC Training, CITF or CDCS?

Choose by your learning goal. Workplace training and professional qualification preparation serve different needs.

Route Primary purpose Choose it when…
Practical Letters of Credit course Workplace application of LC terms, documents and common issues You need focused, usable LC skills with exercises and feedback.
CITF course Broad trade-finance qualification preparation You want a wider foundation across payment methods, financing and risk.
CDCS course Specialist documentary-credit qualification preparation You are pursuing the professional qualification and its examinations.
Advanced document-examination workshop Deeper technical practice with complex presentations You already know the basics and need focused examination feedback.

For guarantees and standby-related needs, ask about the appropriate specialist route. Browse trade-finance training in Singapore, or read our guide to CDCS certification for qualification background.

For a specialist qualification focused on demand guarantees and relevant standby-credit principles, explore our CSDG course in Singapore. This is a different route from practical commercial LC training.

Working with guarantees or standby credits? Our Bank Guarantees & Standby LC course covers practical URDG 758 and ISP98 application, wording and demands. Commercial documentary-credit training remains the focus of this Letters of Credit course.
