Practical Bank Guarantees and Standby LC Training
Learn how bank guarantees and standby letters of credit work from draft wording to issuance, amendment, demand, payment or refusal, and release. Practise URDG 758, ISP98, counter-guarantees, SWIFT messages and Singapore transaction workflows.
What is this course?
An instructor-led professional course covering bank guarantees, demand guarantees and standby letters of credit. Learn how these instruments support a commercial transaction, how the wording affects obligations, and how to handle amendments, demands and expiry.
The course combines URDG 758 and ISP98 with practical examples. It also introduces ISDGP 814 and explains when other rules or governing law need attention.
Who should attend?
Bank guarantee and trade operations teams, transaction-banking professionals, treasury staff, procurement teams, project managers and businesses handling international contracts.
Newer learners can build a foundation; experienced professionals can strengthen wording review and difficult demand decisions. Choose the complete course or a focused workshop for your team.

Bank Guarantees & Standby LC Course Topics
Follow the instrument from commercial purpose and wording to issue, demand examination and closure.
1. Understand Guarantees, Standbys and the Parties
Bid bonds, performance guarantees, advance-payment guarantees, payment guarantees and standby LCs. Understand applicants, beneficiaries, guarantors, advising banks and counter-guarantors. Distinguish independent undertakings from suretyships and the underlying contract.
2. Apply URDG 758, ISP98 and Relevant Practice
Use URDG 758 for demand guarantees and ISP98 for standbys where the undertaking incorporates them. Introduce ISDGP 814 and compare relevant UCP 600 concepts. Separate contractual rules, instrument wording and governing law.
3. Standby Letters of Credit: ISP98 in Practice
Give standby credits their own practical focus, from financial and performance standbys to the documents needed for a drawing.
- Independence and documentary character: distinguish the standby from the underlying transaction.
- ISP98, UCP 600 and URDG 758: understand their different focus and check which rules the undertaking incorporates.
- Drawing requirements, demand statements, presentation, examination and refusal notices.
- Expiry and automatic-extension clauses, including non-extension notifications.
- Transfer, assignment of proceeds, confirmation and counter-standby structures.
- Reduction, cancellation and the risks faced by the applicant, issuer and beneficiary.
Use original exercises to compare payment demands, extension and reduction wording, transfers, counter-standbys and confirmations. IIBLP explains ISP98’s standby-specific scope; its model forms provide further reference context.
4. Review Guarantee and Standby Wording
Check amount, currency, parties, dates, demand statements, presentation requirements, reduction clauses and cancellation. Spot unclear wording, conflicting expectations and conditions that need clarification before issue.
5. Manage Issue, Advising and Amendments
Applications, issuance, advising, authentication, amendments, acceptance and records. Understand operational workflows, transmission and translation issues, and common SWIFT guarantee and standby messages from issuance through amendment, demand and release.
6. Examine Demands and Make a Reasoned Decision
Review presented documents against the undertaking and applicable rules. Identify discrepancies, deadlines, payment, rejection, waiver and notice requirements. Practise clear reasoning and appropriate escalation.
7. Handle Expiry, Extend-or-Pay and Closure
Fixed expiry, expiry events, extend-or-pay demands, reductions and termination. Understand transfer and assignment of proceeds, and distinguish them from amendment or cancellation.
8. Work with Counter-Guarantees and Cross-Border Structures
Direct and indirect guarantees, counter-guarantee relationships, separate obligations, presentation locations and coordination between banks. Examine how mismatched wording or dates can create risk.
9. Apply the Learning to Singapore Transactions
Bank operations, treasury, procurement, infrastructure, shipping and ASEAN trade cases. Introduce Singapore digital-guarantee workflows and discuss what changes—and what still requires careful wording and document review.
This is EduDelphi’s practical course outline, not an official CSDG examination syllabus. Rule application depends on the undertaking and transaction.
Direct Guarantees, Indirect Guarantees and Counter-Standbys
Understand who owes what to whom before examining the wording or a demand.
| Structure | Simplified flow |
|---|---|
| Direct guarantee | Applicant → issuing bank → beneficiary |
| Indirect guarantee | Applicant → counter-guarantor → local issuing bank → beneficiary |
| Counter-standby | The applicant’s bank issues a standby supporting another bank’s separate local undertaking. |
The undertakings in an indirect structure are separate obligations. Do not assume their wording, expiry dates or demand conditions match. Learn to identify each beneficiary, presentation requirement and deadline.
These flows simplify the main obligations; advising and other parties may also be involved. See OCBC’s Singapore guarantee and standby overview.
Guarantee & Standby SWIFT Messages in Practice
Connect the message with the transaction: issue, amend, acknowledge, demand, refuse, reduce or release.
Explore common guarantee and standby SWIFT messages
| Message | Practical purpose |
|---|---|
| MT760 | Communicate issuance of a guarantee or standby, including relevant counter-undertaking arrangements. |
| MT761 | Continue undertaking wording when the MT760 needs additional space. |
| MT765 | Communicate a payment demand, which may include an extend-or-pay request. |
| MT767 | Communicate an amendment to a guarantee or standby. |
| MT768 | Acknowledge receipt of a guarantee or standby message. |
| MT769 | Advise a reduction or release. |
| MT785 | Notify non-extension of a guarantee or standby. |
| MT786 | Communicate refusal of a demand. |
| MT787 | Respond to an amendment. |
This is practical transaction training, not a SWIFT technical-certification course. Learners understand where the messages sit in the workflow and connect them with wording, documents, deadlines and operational decisions.
A message type alone does not establish that a demand complies or that an amendment is accepted. Read the content alongside the undertaking and applicable rules.
Teaching uses illustrative messages. Banks must follow the applicable standards release and their own controls. SWIFT Standards and User Handbook.
Original teaching example
A Singapore Performance Guarantee: What Would You Clarify?
A fictional Singapore company signs a S$2 million ASEAN equipment contract. The buyer requests a 10% performance guarantee: S$200,000.
The draft has a fixed expiry date, a required demand statement and a reduction clause. The contract team expects protection until final acceptance, which may happen after the guarantee’s expiry.
Your task: identify what should be clarified before the guarantee is issued. This is a course exercise, not an official exam question.

| Check | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Amount and reduction | When does S$200,000 reduce, and what evidence triggers that reduction? |
| Expiry and presentation | Does the presentation deadline match the intended protection period? |
| Demand requirements | Which statement and documents must the beneficiary present? |
| Applicable rules | Which rules are expressly incorporated, and what does the actual text say? |
| Contract expectations | Are the commercial team’s expectations reflected in the undertaking? |
See the worked approach
First compare the intended commercial protection with the draft undertaking. Clarify the expiry, reduction mechanism and required presentation before issue. Do not assume the underlying contract automatically extends or rewrites an independent guarantee.
Then review the complete wording, incorporated rules and relevant law. A demand decision needs the actual undertaking and documents—not just this short scenario. In class, faculty help you explain the issue, support your reasoning and identify what needs escalation.

Guarantee Skills for Singapore Banking and Business
Connect the rules with the decisions made by banks, treasury teams and businesses working across Singapore and ASEAN.
| Team or work context | Practical course connection |
|---|---|
| Bank guarantee and trade operations | Wording, amendments, demands, notices and operational escalation |
| Regional treasury and transaction banking | Security structures, party obligations and cross-border risk |
| Procurement, construction and projects | Bid, performance and advance-payment guarantees; expiry and reduction |
| Trading, shipping and ASEAN business | Counter-guarantees, international counterparties and standby arrangements |
Singapore banks offer banker’s guarantees and standby letters of credit for business transactions. The training helps you understand the instrument and its obligations; it does not replace a bank’s approval process.
How does Singapore’s eGuarantee@Gov fit into the course?
From 1 April 2025, applicants participating in new Singapore Government Agency tenders or applying for licences that require guarantees must submit eGuarantees instead of paper guarantees. The official portal describes issuance as usually taking less than one day, subject to bank conditions such as credit limits. This is not a guaranteed turnaround for every transaction.
Digital delivery changes the workflow—not necessarily the legal or documentary content of the undertaking. We cover electronic transmission, beneficiary identification, the guarantee data and wording, and amendment and discharge workflows.
The applicant applies through a participating financial institution; the institution issues the guarantee data through Customs eServices; the beneficiary verifies it. See the official process.
Distinguish the digital delivery channel from incorporated rules. Electronic delivery does not automatically make a guarantee subject to URDG 758 or remove its wording and presentation requirements.

Bank Guarantees & Standby LC Course FAQs
What is the difference between a bank guarantee and a standby LC?
Both can provide security if an applicant fails to meet an obligation, but their terms, structure and applicable rules can differ. Demand guarantees commonly incorporate URDG 758; standbys may incorporate ISP98 or other stated rules. The undertaking itself must be read carefully.
Does every guarantee follow URDG 758?
No. URDG 758 applies when the guarantee expressly indicates that it is subject to those rules. Similarly, do not assume every standby is subject to ISP98. Training covers how to identify the incorporated rules and distinguish them from governing law.
ICC guarantee resources and IIBLP’s ISP98 resources provide further rule context.
