What Is CPIM Certification and Who Awards It?

CPIM stands for Certified in Planning and Inventory Management. It is an APICS professional certification governed by the Association for Supply Chain Management, or ASCM.

CPIM focuses on the connected decisions inside an organisation: strategy, sales and operations planning, demand, supply, inventory, detailed scheduling, distribution, quality, technology and continuous improvement.

EduDelphi provides independent instructor-led training and exam preparation. ASCM owns the CPIM examination, credential, policies and certification maintenance requirements.

Clear distinction: completing EduDelphi training does not itself award the CPIM designation. Candidates earn the credential through ASCM after meeting the current official examination and certification requirements.

Who Should Take the CPIM Course in Singapore?

CPIM is strongest for professionals who plan, control or improve the flow of demand, materials, inventory, production and internal operations.

Demand and supply planners

Build stronger forecasting, balancing, replenishment and S&OP capability.

Production and materials teams

Strengthen MPS, MRP, capacity, scheduling and material-availability decisions.

Inventory professionals

Connect service targets, inventory policy, safety stock, accuracy and working capital.

Manufacturing and operations

Understand how strategy, planning, Lean and continuous improvement work together.

ERP, S&OP and IBP users

Develop the planning logic behind systems, cross-functional reviews and decision cycles.

Supply-chain professionals

Move deeper into planning from procurement, logistics, distribution or broader supply-chain roles.

Choosing another route: consider CSCP Singapore for end-to-end supply-chain strategy or CIPS Level 4 Singapore for procurement, sourcing and commercial practice.

What Changed in CPIM 9.0?

CPIM 9.0 expanded the previous eight-area structure to nine areas and gives internal and external supply planning clearer, separate treatment.

CPIM 8.0

The previous structure used one combined supply area. Its exam version sunset on 31 May 2026.

CPIM 9.0

The active blueprint separates Internal Supply Sources and External Supply Sources, strengthening the distinction between make-side and buy-side planning decisions.

Using older resources? Candidates with CPIM 8.0 books, question banks or course pages should make sure their principal preparation now follows the active CPIM 9.0 Exam Content Manual.

Current exam blueprint

CPIM 9.0 Syllabus: Nine Modules and Exam Weights

The current CPIM examination integrates planning and inventory decisions across nine weighted content areas.

Current version: CPIM 9.0 is the active nine-area exam blueprint. ASCM introduced the 9.0 Exam Content Manual on 3 February 2026; the previous eight-area version sunset on 31 May 2026. Candidates preparing now should use CPIM 9.0 materials.

CPIM Planning, Inventory and Calculation Practice

The course develops the ability to work through a planning problem, interpret the result and choose an appropriate operational response.

Learners practise forecasting performance and bias, safety stock and reorder points, economic order decisions, inventory turns and days of supply, MPS and MRP logic, product structures, capacity and load, scheduling, priority control and available-to-promise concepts.

Questions are reviewed for both method and judgement. The objective is not only to reach a number, but also to understand the assumptions, operational impact and management decision behind it.

Singapore CPIM Case: Balancing Demand, Capacity and Imported Materials

A Singapore electronics manufacturer faces a demand increase while a critical imported component has a longer lead time and production capacity is constrained.

Demand signal

Review forecast change, customer priorities, forecast error and the effect on the aggregate plan.

Materials and inventory

Evaluate component availability, safety stock, lot size, supplier lead time and the risk of excess or shortage.

Capacity and schedule

Compare available capacity, bottlenecks, overtime, sequencing and service implications.

How learners work through it: clarify the planning horizon, test assumptions, identify the constraint, compare service and cost implications, and select the next planning action. This is an original EduDelphi teaching case, not an official or recalled ASCM examination question.

How CPIM Skills Apply in Singapore

Singapore’s role in advanced manufacturing and regional supply chains makes integrated planning capability useful across several major operating environments.

Semiconductors and electronics

Demand volatility, component lead times, capacity constraints, inventory positioning and multi-tier supplier risk.

Pharma and medtech

Service continuity, controlled materials, planning accuracy, supplier reliability and disciplined operations.

FMCG and retail

Forecasting, replenishment, seasonality, promotions, service levels and inventory productivity.

Aerospace and engineering

Long lead times, materials planning, maintenance demand, schedule reliability and asset-intensive operations.

Regional distribution

Imported inventory, ASEAN flows, warehousing, allocation, network replenishment and customer service.

S&OP and planning centres

Cross-functional planning, scenario review, performance measures and management decision support.

Career context: CPIM can strengthen a professional planning profile, but no certification guarantees a role, promotion or salary outcome. Experience, sector knowledge and demonstrated capability remain important.
