What is the CFE credential?

The Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) is a professional credential awarded by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). It covers fraud schemes, investigations, legal issues, prevention and deterrence. EduDelphi provides the training and preparation; ACFE manages eligibility, examinations and the credential.

Suitable for fraud analysts, investigators, internal auditors, risk and compliance professionals, accountants and finance-control teams. You can begin preparation while building experience; exam eligibility and final certification requirements are different.

Current examination structure

CFE Exam Changed on 2 June 2026

If older CFE resources show four exam sections, they describe the previous structure. The current exam uses three separately scheduled sections. EduDelphi’s teaching, questions and mocks follow the post-2 June 2026 structure.

Previous structure Current structure — since 2 June 2026
Four sections: Financial Transactions and Fraud Schemes; Law; Investigation; Fraud Prevention and Deterrence. Three sections: Fraud Schemes and Financial Crimes; Fraud Investigations and Legal Issues; Fraud Prevention and Deterrence.

CFE Syllabus: Current Three-Section Exam

The revised CFE examination became effective on 2 June 2026. Our teaching, resources, practice and mocks follow this active structure.

Fraud Schemes and Financial Crimes

120 questions | 2.5 hours

Understand how fraud schemes operate, recognise financial and non-financial warning signs, and connect transactions, records and controls.

  • Asset misappropriation, procurement, payments and employee fraud.
  • Financial statement fraud, accounting information and financial analysis.
  • Corruption, bribery and conflicts of interest.
  • Financial crimes, money laundering, identity and technology-enabled fraud.

Apply the concepts to supplier payments, reimbursements, digital transactions and regional business processes.

Fraud Investigations and Legal Issues

120 questions | 2.5 hours

Learn how examiners plan investigations, evaluate information and document defensible findings.

  • Investigation planning, evidence sources and document analysis.
  • Interviewing, information gathering and report writing.
  • Digital evidence and investigation techniques.
  • Legal concepts, individual rights and responsibilities relevant to fraud examination.

Practice separating suspicion from evidence and choosing the most appropriate next action. Applicable local law depends on the jurisdiction and facts.

Fraud Prevention and Deterrence

70 questions | 1.5 hours

Connect fraud risk with governance, controls, reporting and an organisation’s response.

  • Fraud-risk assessment and prevention controls.
  • Corporate governance, ethics and professional responsibilities.
  • Behavioural factors, reporting channels and deterrence.
  • Evaluating control weaknesses and improving anti-fraud programmes.

Use cases to explain how organisations can reduce opportunities for fraud and respond consistently.

Practical Fraud Learning: A Singapore Supplier Case

A Singapore regional distributor flags three supplier invoices totalling S$84,000. Each invoice is below the S$30,000 approval threshold. Bank details changed before payment, one delivery record is missing, and some goods genuinely arrived.

Information available What learners examine
Split invoices and a recent bank-account change Approval history, purchase orders, payment authorisation and independent verification.
An address appears linked to an employee Source reliability, ownership information and possible alternative explanations.
Partial delivery records and genuine goods received Matching records, outstanding evidence and the scope of any suspected loss.
The manager cites an urgent operational need Whether exceptions were authorised and what the investigation should establish.

How faculty approach the case

Start by defining the concern and preserving relevant records. Verify changes independently, compare invoices with approvals and deliveries, and test alternative explanations. Plan neutral interviews and document what is known, what is uncertain and what needs escalation. Red flags justify examination; they do not establish fraud on their own.

Optional tutor-reviewed practical assignments

Add practical work to your preparation: a fraud-risk register, an investigation plan with an evidence log, and a short findings report. Faculty feedback helps improve the reasoning, structure and clarity of your work.

CFE Eligibility: Taking the Exam vs Earning the Credential

You can start training before meeting every certification requirement. ACFE determines eligibility for the examination and the final credential.

Stage Current requirement
Sit the examination ACFE Associate membership and at least 40 eligibility points.
Earn the CFE credential At least 50 points, two years of qualifying fraud-related experience, successful examinations and applicable ethics/application requirements.
Education and experience Points depend on ACFE’s rules. An accounting degree is not universally required; qualifying experience may come from several fraud-related disciplines.

We help you understand the route and prepare your questions. Use ACFE’s eligibility calculator and current requirements to check your profile.

Does a bachelor’s degree give me 40 points?

A qualifying bachelor’s degree or equivalent earns 40 educational points. It does not need to be in accounting, finance or criminology. Selected approved professional credentials may also contribute points; check ACFE’s calculator for the current list.

You do not need two years of experience before taking the exam. You may sit at 40 qualifying points; receiving the credential requires 50 points and two years of qualifying experience.

CFE Application Checklist

  • Active ACFE Associate membership.
  • Proof of education and any professional certifications claimed.
  • Details and supporting evidence of relevant work experience, where applicable.
  • Three professional recommendations from people familiar with your work and conduct.

Follow ACFE’s required-documentation instructions.

CFE Exam Format, Booking, Results and Retakes

The current CFE exam has three separately scheduled sections. It is closed-book and closed-notes, using multiple-choice and True/False questions.

Exam detail Current rule
Sections 120 questions / 2.5 hours; 120 questions / 2.5 hours; 70 questions / 1.5 hours.
Passing requirement 75% in each section.
Delivery Prometric test centre or remotely through ProProctor, subject to availability and testing requirements.
Activated examination window 60 days to complete the examination sections. This is separate from your full study timeline.
Results Emailed within 24 hours.
Retakes Up to five attempts per section. First three attempts have no waiting period; fourth and fifth attempts require a 30-day wait.

What happens after five unsuccessful attempts?

If you do not pass a section within five attempts, your programme eligibility and all previous exam results expire. You must wait two years from your last attempt before reapplying.

Each paid retake eligibility provides a new 60-day window for the unsuccessful section(s). Attempts four and five require a 30-day wait.

Plan your study and mocks before activating the examination window. For remote testing, check your computer, identification and room requirements before booking.

Official reference: ACFE exam FAQs. Rules and appointment availability can change.

How do CFE holders maintain the credential?

ACFE currently requires 20 CPE credits annually, including at least ten fraud-related and two ethics credits, together with continuing membership and applicable reporting. See the official CPE requirements.

Whistleblowing and investigations Scope, evidence gathering, neutral interviews and escalation.
Financial records and unusual transactions Accounting information, patterns, alternative explanations and supporting records.

CFE vs CIA vs CAMS vs CISA vs CFCS

Choose by the work you want to do—not simply by which credential sounds broader.

Credential Primary focus Typical career alignment Choose this when…
CFE Fraud schemes, investigations, evidence, legal issues and prevention. Fraud investigations, forensic work, fraud risk and misconduct cases. Investigating and preventing fraud is central to your role.
CIA Internal audit, governance, risk, controls and assurance. Internal audit, assurance and audit leadership. You assess the organisation more broadly through internal audit.
CAMS AML/CFT, KYC, sanctions and financial-crime compliance. AML, CDD, sanctions, monitoring and AFC compliance. Your work centres on preventing money laundering and regulated financial crime.
CISA Information-systems audit, IT controls and technology risk. IT audit, technology assurance and systems controls. Your main responsibility is auditing information systems and technology controls.
CFCS Broad financial crime, including fraud, AML, corruption, cybercrime and asset recovery. Multidisciplinary financial-crime investigations and AFC work. You want breadth across several financial-crime disciplines.
