Preparation time will vary based on experience and background. On an average, candidates should spend about 250 + to 300 + hours studying for each part.

No work experience is required to sit for the Exam; however, candidates must have at least two years of professional work experience to complete their certification and use the FRM designation.

The two designations attest to different skills and aspects of a professional’s capabilities and complement each other well. The FRM is focused on risk and tests knowledge of topics such as market risk, operational risk, integrated risk management, valuation, risk models, and investment risk management. The CFA provides an overview of financial topics but does not cover risk in the same depth as the FRM. Many professionals choose to demonstrate their mutual competencies by earning both designations, especially given the prominent role of risk management in the global financial industry.

The FRM Exam has a quantitative component, but the concepts are presented in real-world situations that risk managers’ face.

There are currently more than 60,000 FRMs employed globally at nearly every major bank, asset management firm, hedge fund, consulting firm, and regulator.

No, you do not have to be a Member to register or sit for the Exam. As part of the initial enrolment in the FRM Program, though, candidates will receive a one-year GARP Individual Membership and all its privileges, which can be set to renew automatically during a candidate’s registration. Certified FRMs are offered a discounted membership rate in recognition of their professional achievements and dedication to best practices in financial risk.

No, but GARP strongly recommends participation in the CPD Program to maintain the value of certification. The program requires FRMs to earn 40 credits every two years. In general, one credit is awarded for every hour spent on a relevant educational activity.

In 2021, all FRM Exams will be administered via CBT, with the exception of the May Part II Exam, which will remain paper-based to allow candidates to complete their certification in the way they began. In addition, GARP is now offering its Exams for multiple days at a time per month, as opposed to its previous, single day tradition

Financial Risk Manager (FRM) offered by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP), the FRM certification is recognized as the most recognized certification for risk managers. Those with the FRM designation are in high demand because of their demonstrated ability to anticipate, respond, and adapt to critical risk issues. The FRM’s are highly demanded in banks & financial companies.

To earn the FRM certification, you must take and pass Part I and Part II of the FRM Exam. There are no education or work requirements for taking the exam, but after you pass both parts, you must demonstrate that you’ve had at least two years of full-time work experience in the field of risk. Finance-related vocations are the only ones considered as acceptable work experience. Examples include portfolio management, industry research, trading, and risk consulting.

There is no eligibility requirement for appearing for the FRM exam. So, you can appear for the FRM exam, clear the same and then get the relevant work experience and then get the certification.
If you pass the FRM exam (Full exam or both Part-1 and Part-2) but does not have the 2 years of relevant work experience, GARP issues a letter stating that the candidate has passed the FRM exam. The candidate will be considered as “FRM Holder” but not “Certified FRM Holder”. The candidate can use the FRM designation only after submitting the proof of the 2 years of work experience to GARP, and after receiving the GARP confirmation that the candidate has been formally included on its registry of certified FRM holders. However.

ere are no restrictions as when you can re-register for FRM Exam Part I. If you re-register you will be required to pay the exam fee only, you do not have to pay the enrollment fee again.

The FRM Exam Part I focuses on the tools used to assess financial risk, and it is always offered in the morning. It has more questions than Part II. Part II focuses on the application of the tools, and it is always offered in the afternoon.

Part I will be offered in May, July, and November, and Part II will be offered in May and December.

FRM-Part I Exam is computer-based; with 100 multiple-choice questions. The May Part II exam is paper-and-pencil based; however, the December Part II exam will be computer based. The Part II exam has 80 multiple choice questions. Both Parts of the FRM exam are four hours in length.

Part I tests your knowledge of the tools used for risk management. The topics and their weights are:

    Foundations of risk management (20%)
    Quantitative analysis (20%)
    Financial markets and products (30%)
    Valuation and risk models (30%)

The topics of Part II are based on applying the tools tested in Part I and are weighted as follows:

On the top end of the scale are senior financial risk managers or executives, who earn an average of $151,000.

In 2019, the average pass rate for Part I was 44% and 59% for Part II.
