IMA’s management-accounting certification for planning, performance and strategic finance.
A state-led licence route for US accounting, assurance, reporting and regulation.
A broad professional-accountancy qualification and membership pathway.
QUICK ANSWER
Which is better: US CMA, US CPA or ACCA?
None is automatically better. US CMA is the clearest first choice for management accounting, FP&A, costing, performance and commercial finance. US CPA is the route to test when US licensure, audit, reporting, tax or US-facing accounting work matters. ACCA is the broader accountancy route for candidates who want structured progression across reporting, audit, finance, ethics and practical experience.
The right choice depends on the next credible responsibility you want, the market where you intend to work and the requirements you can realistically meet. That is more useful than asking which qualification has the shortest exam timetable or the largest salary headline.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- US CMA develops management-finance and business-decision capability.
- US CPA is a board-specific US licence route, not a universal global licence.
- ACCA develops broad professional-accountancy knowledge and requires more than passing papers for membership.
- Use this guide to shortlist a route, then read the detailed two-way guide before committing.
THE THREE-WAY COMPARISON
US CMA vs CPA vs ACCA at a glance
These three routes overlap in accounting and finance, but their centre of gravity is different. This table answers the first decision. The detailed comparisons later in the article answer the next one.
| Decision factor | US CMA | US CPA | ACCA |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | IMA management-accounting certification. | Licence issued through a chosen US jurisdiction after its rules are met. | Professional-accountancy qualification and membership route. |
| Core focus | Planning, performance, costing, controls, corporate finance and business decisions. | US reporting, audit, regulation, tax and accountancy licensure. | Reporting, audit, tax, management accounting, finance, ethics and strategy. |
| Assessment path | Two parts across 12 management-finance competency areas. | AUD, FAR, REG and one Discipline: BAR, ISC or TCP. | Up to 13 current-qualification exams, subject to formal exemptions. |
| Best first question | Do I want to influence internal financial and operating decisions? | Do I need a US licence route or US-linked audit/reporting capability? | Do I want broad staged accountancy development and membership progression? |
| What to verify | IMA membership, education, experience and current certification rules. | The selected state board’s education, experience and licence rules. | Entry route, exemptions, Ethics module and Practical Experience Requirement. |
US CMA LENS
Choose US CMA for management accounting and business performance
US CMA is usually the closest fit for professionals who work with budgets, forecasts, cost, pricing, margin, controls, performance analysis or business decisions. IMA’s two parts cover planning and performance on one side, then analysis, corporate finance, risk, investment and ethics on the other.
It is not a substitute for a statutory audit licence where one is needed. It is a focused route for people who want finance to influence how an organisation performs. Read What Is US CMA? and the CMA eligibility guide before deciding.
US CPA LENS
Choose US CPA when a US jurisdiction and licence route matter
US CPA differs from the other two because it is a licence route governed by a selected US state or territory. The Uniform CPA Examination is a core requirement, but NASBA confirms that education, experience and other requirements vary by jurisdiction. Passing the exam is not the same as holding every licence right.
EXAM
Four sections
AUD, FAR, REG and one Discipline. AICPA uses a minimum scaled score of 75 per section.
ROUTE
Board first
Choose the jurisdiction and assess your education before treating CPA as a generic course purchase.
FIT
US-facing responsibility
It is most relevant for US reporting, audit, tax, public-accounting and licensure-led plans.
Use What Is US CPA?, the CPA Exam sections guide and the international state-board guide for the route detail.
ACCA LENS
Choose ACCA for broad accountancy development and membership progression
ACCA is usually the stronger starting point for an early-career accountant or finance learner who wants broad progression across financial reporting, audit, tax, management accounting and strategy. Under the current qualification, candidates may have up to 13 exams, subject to formal exemptions, and must plan ethics and practical experience for membership.
That breadth is valuable when it matches the career plan. It is not automatically the right choice for someone who needs a focused commercial-finance route or a US state licence. Use What Is ACCA?, the ACCA eligibility guide and the ACCA exemptions guide for the next decision.
ELIGIBILITY BEFORE ENROLMENT
Can you actually enter the route you are considering?
A job title or a related credential does not create the same entry rights across IMA, a US state board and ACCA. The responsible order is simple: confirm the official route first, then choose tuition and study materials.
IMA certification requires active membership, programme enrollment, qualifying education, experience and both exam parts.
The selected jurisdiction determines education, evaluation, experience and licence requirements.
Direct entry, Foundations and exemptions depend on formal prior learning and the current rules.
Verify through the IMA CMA Handbook, the relevant NASBA and state-board guidance, and the ACCA exemptions calculator.
CAREER-FIT SELECTOR
Which route fits common starting points?
FP&A analyst or cost accountant
Investigate US CMA first. Its management-finance focus is the closest direct fit.
US-facing audit or reporting candidate
Investigate US CPA first. Confirm the exact board route before planning study.
Early-career accounting learner
Investigate ACCA first. It offers a broad staged accountancy pathway, subject to eligibility and experience planning.
Experienced accountant moving into commercial finance
Investigate US CMA first. It may add more relevant planning and decision capability than repeating a broad foundation.
ACCA professional considering another credential
Define the missing capability first. Add CMA for management finance or test CPA only when a US licence route has a clear role purpose.
International professional without a US-licence need
Compare ACCA and CMA first. The real choice is broad accountancy progression versus a management-finance specialism.
GO DEEPER ONLY WHEN NEEDED
Use the detailed guide for the two routes you are actually considering
This article helps you shortlist. Once two options remain, a direct comparison is more useful than repeating a three-column table. It gives you room to compare requirements, work style, cost categories and career direction without mixing in a third route you may not need.
COST AND TIME WITHOUT FALSE TOTALS
How should you compare cost and duration?
Do not compare these routes through one advertised “total fee” or fastest completion claim. US CMA involves IMA membership, programme, exam and certification requirements. US CPA costs and timing depend heavily on the jurisdiction, evaluation, examination, licensing and international-testing route. ACCA costs depend on registration, subscriptions, papers or exemptions, Ethics and Professional Skills Module and preparation choices.
Two exam parts, but plan membership, education, experience and the current case-based format too.
Read CMA fees
Four exam sections are only one part of a board-specific path to eventual licensure.
Read US CPA costs
The route can include up to 13 exams, but exemptions and a realistic paper pace change the plan.
Read ACCA fees
The better comparison is your personal route stack: official-body costs, evaluation or exemption decisions, study support, realistic weekly study time and the experience required for the credential you want. Use the US CPA duration guide and ACCA duration guide before judging a route by its exam count.
SHYAM’S FIELD PERSPECTIVE
The fastest-looking exam route is not always the best career route
After more than a decade of guiding US CMA, US CPA and ACCA candidates, I have seen a repeat pattern: people choose the shortest-looking route before deciding which work they want to be trusted with. That can create a qualification mismatch that is harder to explain in an interview than it was to see at the beginning.
A second qualification should close a defined capability gap. It is not automatically the right next move simply because it adds another acronym. Get the first route, experience and target responsibility clear before adding another.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
US CMA vs CPA vs ACCA FAQs
Is US CMA easier than US CPA or ACCA?
US CMA has fewer exam parts, but difficulty depends on your accounting base, work schedule and how closely the subjects match your experience. It is not universally easier.
Can an ACCA student pursue US CMA?
Potentially, if the candidate meets IMA’s current requirements. The useful reason is a genuine target in management accounting or commercial finance, not simply collecting qualifications.
Can US CMA or ACCA make you eligible for US CPA?
No single answer applies. CPA eligibility and licensure are jurisdiction-specific, so candidates must check the chosen board’s current education, examination and experience rules.
Do these qualifications guarantee a salary increase?
No. They can improve capability and credibility, but compensation depends on the market, employer, responsibilities, experience and the quality of your applied work.
Can you do more than one?
Yes, where the second route supports a clear career direction. For example, a US CPA may later choose CMA for business-finance depth, or an ACCA professional may choose CPA for a defined US licence plan.
What should I do before enrolling?
Confirm the official route, entry requirements, realistic schedule and separate body fees from tuition. Then select a preparation format that supports your actual work and study capacity.
