What CISSP is for

Choose CISSP when you need to connect the whole security picture

This route is best aligned to professionals who are already working across cybersecurity, IT, controls, architecture, risk or operations and now need broader judgement across an organisation’s security posture.

Security architecture & engineering

For professionals shaping secure designs, cryptography, cloud choices, resilience and technical control patterns.

GRC, risk & assurance

For people connecting security risk, governance, audit evidence, compliance and business accountability.

Security operations & IAM

For leaders working with monitoring, incident response, privileged access, recovery and operational controls.

Security leadership path

For experienced practitioners preparing to contribute to wider security programmes and senior decisions.

When another route may fit better: CISA is more IT-audit-led, CISM is security-management-led, CRISC centres on IT risk and controls, and CCSP is cloud-security specific.

Current CISSP syllabus

CISSP Syllabus: Eight Security Domains & Exam Weightings

The official CISSP exam outline is organised across eight weighted domains. EduDelphi’s separate mock strategy helps candidates practise the judgement required by CAT-style questions.

1. Security and Risk Management – 16%
  • Security ethics, governance, policy, legal and regulatory context.
  • Risk management, threat modelling, supply-chain risk and business continuity.
  • Security awareness and security strategy aligned to business objectives.
2. Asset Security – 10%
  • Data and asset classification, ownership and secure handling.
  • Data lifecycle, retention, destruction and protection requirements.
  • Security controls for data at rest, in use and in transit.
3. Security Architecture and Engineering – 13%

EduDelphi CAT Strategy & Mock Rehearsal
Our preparation method focuses on interpreting what a senior security professional should do first, what evidence matters, which risk or control objective is central, and why other plausible answers are weaker. This is EduDelphi course methodology, not an official ninth CISSP domain.
Practical learning example

Learn through practical security decision scenarios

CISSP preparation is more useful when candidates can connect a technical warning sign to the risk, control, owner and escalation decision it creates.

Example: third-party cloud access risk. A supplier receives temporary privileged access to a cloud environment, but access reviews are overdue, logging coverage is incomplete and the supplier’s contract does not clearly define incident notification. Learners discuss the evidence to gather, the control gaps, appropriate ownership and the priority actions before drawing conclusions.
  • Separate a security symptom from the underlying business-risk decision.
  • Identify the accountable owner, relevant controls and evidence needed.
  • Decide what should be contained, escalated, tested and monitored next.

Eligibility & official route

Who Can Take CISSP? Experience Requirements & the Associate Route

CISSP exam preparation and full credential eligibility are not the same. ISC2 makes the official experience and endorsement determination.

5 yearscumulative paid full-time experience for certification
2+ domainsexperience across the current eight-domain outline
1 yearmaximum possible waiver under applicable ISC2 rules
6 yearsAssociate of ISC2 period to earn the required experience

Can I sit the CISSP exam before I have five years of experience?

Yes. Candidates may take the exam before meeting the full experience requirement. If you pass first, the Associate of ISC2 route allows time to gain the required qualifying experience before seeking the CISSP credential.

The waiver rules are specific: a qualifying degree or one ISC2-approved credential may satisfy up to one year only. Check the current ISC2 CISSP experience requirements.

CISSP Experience Waiver – Updated in 2026: ISC2 revised its approved waiver-credential list on 1 April 2026. A qualifying degree or one approved credential may reduce the five-year experience requirement by one year, but waivers cannot be combined. Examples currently include CCSP, CISM, CompTIA Security+, SecurityX, AWS Certified Security – Specialty, CGRC and CSSLP. View ISC2’s current approved waiver list or read the CISSP eligibility and experience guide.
CAT exam preparation

How the CISSP CAT Exam Actually Works

The CISSP examination is adaptive: each response helps determine the next item. Preparing for the format means planning your time, reading each scenario closely and committing to the best available response.

Official current reference What candidates should plan for
Exam format Computerized Adaptive Testing with multiple-choice and advanced item types.
Questions 100-150 exam items. Each minimum-length CAT exam includes 25 unscored pretest items; candidates cannot distinguish them from scored items.
Duration 3 hours. Breaks are permitted, but all break time counts toward the maximum administration time.
Answer review Once an answer is finalised, it cannot be reviewed or changed.
Passing score 700 out of 1,000 points; this is a scaled score, not 70% correct.
Results Pass/fail results are issued immediately after CAT completion. ISC2 does not provide a numerical score; eligible unsuccessful candidates receive domain diagnostic feedback.
Testing ISC2-authorized Pearson VUE test centres, subject to current rules and availability.
Languages English, Chinese, German, Japanese and Spanish under the current outline.

Adaptive format

No backtracking

Read before finalising: CAT uses your earlier responses to select the next item, so ISC2 does not allow item review.

Time control

Breaks use exam time

Plan food, water and pacing around the three-hour clock rather than assuming an optional break pauses it.

Retake policy

30 / 60 / 90 days

ISC2 currently permits up to four attempts in 12 months, with longer test-free waits after subsequent unsuccessful attempts.

CAT practice matters: adaptive exams test security judgement as well as recall. EduDelphi mock review therefore focuses on why the best response is most appropriate for the stated scenario, not simply on memorising an answer.
After the exam

What Happens After You Pass the CISSP Exam?

A CISSP pass is followed by a separate ISC2 certification application. Passing candidates should plan the experience and endorsement steps promptly rather than treating the exam result as the final step.

Passreceive your CISSP CAT result
Within 9 monthscomplete the ISC2 certification application
Endorsementdocument experience or request ISC2 endorsement
Become certifiedagree to the Code of Ethics and pay the applicable AMF
Important: ISC2 currently requires candidates who pass an ISC2 credential exam to complete their certification application within nine months of the exam date. If you passed before gaining the full CISSP experience requirement, submit for the Associate of ISC2 designation within that same timeframe. Review ISC2’s certification application and endorsement process.
