What is US CMA certification?

US CMA, also called CMA USA, is the Certified Management Accountant credential administered by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). Candidates earn the credential by passing CMA Part 1 and Part 2 and meeting IMA’s applicable education, experience and membership requirements.

US CMA vs IMA: US CMA is the credential. IMA is the professional body that manages the official certification route, fees, testing and maintenance requirements.

Who US CMA is for

Choose US CMA when commercial finance and decision support are central to the role you want next

This is a management-accounting route for professionals who want to interpret performance, influence decisions and connect financial information to operating outcomes.

  • FP&A, business finance, budgeting and management-reporting professionals.
  • Costing, performance-management, controllership and operational-finance teams.
  • Accountants moving from transaction processing toward analysis and commercial responsibility.
  • Finance graduates and emerging managers building broader planning and decision-support capability.
When another route may fit better: US CMA is most relevant to management accounting and commercial finance. CPA/CA is more aligned to accounting, reporting and public practice; ACCA is broader across accounting and finance; CFA is more focused on investments and valuation.

What candidates commonly underestimate: Candidates often spend too much time learning formulas and too little time deciding which information matters in the scenario. In mock review, faculty separate calculation, concept and decision-judgement errors rather than treating every wrong answer the same way.
