Preparing for a 2027 CFA Exam?
CFA Institute has released the 2027 curriculum. For examinations beginning in February 2027, updates concentrate on Level I Quantitative Methods and Equity Investments and affect about 25% of Level I exam content, including financial data science, AI and large language models.
Choose CFA when you want deeper investment and financial-analysis responsibility
CFA preparation is most relevant when investment judgement, valuation, markets, portfolio decisions or analytical finance are central to the work you want to do next.
- Students and graduates planning investment, research, valuation or finance careers.
- Professionals in banking, corporate finance, advisory, wealth, analytics or capital markets.
- Equity research, investment analysis and portfolio-management aspirants.
- Professionals comparing CFA with FRM, US CMA, CPA or a broader finance route.

Understand the CFA Program Path Before You Plan Your Study
The CFA journey combines three examinations, Practical Skills Modules and separate charterholder requirements. We help candidates organise preparation and study planning while they use CFA Institute’s current rules for official decisions.
Eligibility and registration
Level I candidates qualify through a completed bachelor’s degree, the permitted undergraduate window, or the current education/work-experience route. CFA Institute sets the official rules; candidates should confirm their profile and intended exam window directly before registration.
Charterholder requirements
Passing the exams alone does not grant use of the CFA designation. CFA Institute also requires qualifying work experience, membership and references for the charterholder route.
Can You Register for CFA Level I?
Registration eligibility and the later CFA charterholder requirement are different. The official route is decided by CFA Institute, but these current distinctions help candidates plan accurately.
To enter the CFA Program
Level I candidates can currently qualify through a completed bachelor’s degree, an undergraduate route where the selected exam window is within 23 months of graduation, or a combination of 4,000 hours of professional work experience and/or higher education earned over at least three sequential years. For Level II, undergraduates must be within 11 months of graduation; for Level III, the degree must be complete or the professional-experience route met.
To become a CFA charterholder
Passing three examinations does not by itself award the charter. CFA Institute currently requires 4,000 hours of relevant professional work experience accrued over at least 36 months, together with membership and references. The experience must relate to investment decision-making or produce work that informs it, and can be earned before, during or after the program.

CFA Level I, II & III Syllabus: Topics, Application & Exam Preparation
The course follows the current CFA curriculum structure. Each level demands a different kind of performance, from foundational knowledge to valuation and portfolio-level judgement.
CFA Level I: Investment foundations and ethical decision-making
Build fluency in ethical and professional standards, quantitative methods, economics, financial statement analysis, corporate issuers, equity, fixed income, derivatives, alternative investments and portfolio management. Preparation focuses on understanding formulas, concepts and how to apply them under time pressure.
CFA Level II: Asset valuation and applied financial analysis
Develop deeper valuation and analysis capability across equity, fixed income, derivatives, alternatives, financial statement analysis and portfolio concepts. Item-set practice helps candidates interpret information, identify what matters and apply the appropriate method.
CFA Level III: Portfolio management and specialised pathways
Level III integrates portfolio management, asset allocation, portfolio construction, performance measurement, derivatives and risk management, and ethics. Candidates select a Portfolio Management, Private Markets or Private Wealth pathway under the current CFA Institute route.
EduDelphi exam strategy and mock rehearsal
This is EduDelphi preparation methodology rather than an official CFA syllabus topic. It includes study sequencing, revision checkpoints, question debriefs, mock strategy, formula review, application practice and an honest plan for the time still needed between classes.
Learn to identify what matters before reaching for a formula
CFA preparation is stronger when candidates practise financial judgement, not only formula recall. Faculty-led cases help connect a calculation to the economic question behind it.
Example: comparing two investment opportunities. A candidate reviews two businesses with different growth, leverage, cash-flow and valuation signals. Rather than beginning with a formula, the class first identifies the business drivers, information gaps, possible risks and the most relevant analytical approach.
The point is not to predict a market outcome. It is to practise structured reasoning: interpret the evidence, choose an appropriate method, calculate carefully and explain what the result does and does not support.
Investment judgement, not just memorisation
- Separate relevant operating evidence from noise.
- Connect a financial metric to the business decision it supports.
- Choose a defensible analytical method before calculating.
- Explain assumptions, risks and limitations clearly.
CFA Level I, II & III Exam Format, Questions and Study Focus
All three levels use two sessions and require a Practical Skills Module before the corresponding result is released. The work becomes progressively more analytical and applied.
| Level | Format | Sessions and content time | Main task | PSM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level I | 180 multiple-choice questions | 2 sessions of 135 minutes | Learn and describe | Required |
| Level II | 22 item sets / 88 multiple-choice questions | 2 sessions of 132 minutes | Analyse and evaluate | Required |
| Level III | 11 item sets plus 11 constructed-response sets | 2 sessions of 132 minutes | Integrate and apply | Required |
Question formats and session times are current official references and can change. Confirm your intended exam year through CFA Institute’s exam information.
CFA Exam Levels, Study Commitment & Practical Skills Modules
CFA Institute offers Level I each quarter, Level II three times a year and Level III twice a year. Candidates select and schedule their official exam through CFA Institute and Prometric after registration.
Level I
Foundation-level knowledge and application across the full investment curriculum, including ethics and financial analysis.
Level II
Item-set analysis and valuation-focused application of the curriculum across investments and reporting concepts.
Level III
Integrated portfolio judgement, constructed response and item-set work, with a selected specialist pathway.
Build Practical Skills Alongside Each CFA Exam Level
One Practical Skills Module (PSM) is required at each level before CFA Institute releases the result. PSMs typically take around 10-20 hours, and the same PSM cannot be reused at another level.
| Level | Examples of current 2027 PSM options |
|---|---|
| Level I | Financial Modeling; Python Programming Fundamentals. |
| Level II | Python Programming Fundamentals; Python, Data Science & AI; Equity Analyst Skills. |
| Level III | Portfolio Development & Construction; Macro Insights for Investing; Due Diligence; Managing Private Wealth Clients. |

Where CFA Learning Can Support a Finance Career
The CFA curriculum is most relevant to careers that combine financial analysis, investment judgement, valuation, risk awareness, ethics and clear communication.
CFA vs FRM vs US CMA vs CPA: Which Finance Route Fits Your Career?
The best route depends on the primary responsibility you want to own, not simply which acronym is most familiar.
| Route | Core focus | Better fit when |
|---|---|---|
| CFA | Investments, valuation, portfolio management and financial analysis. | Investment judgement and analytical finance are your central direction. |
| FRM | Financial risk, market/credit risk and risk management. | Risk is the specialist responsibility you want to deepen. |
| US CMA | Management accounting, FP&A, performance and finance leadership. | Business performance and management accounting are your focus. |
| US CPA | Accounting, reporting, audit and licensure-based finance routes. | Accounting and assurance are your principal path. |

Corporate CFA Training for Global Finance and Investment Teams
Private preparation is useful when finance, investment, treasury, valuation or advisory teams need a structured CFA route without losing their operating context.
- Private live online cohorts for global teams.
- Level-focused pacing and time-zone-aware planning.
- Applied finance discussion, mock planning and progress support.
- Live, recording-led and tailored delivery options.
When a private CFA cohort adds value
It is most useful when a team needs a shared technical language around investments, analysis, valuation, risk and ethical judgement, while each participant still follows a practical study plan for their chosen level.
