CAIA Course FAQs
The CAIA exams are administered by Pearson VUE testing centers around the world. Review the current list of exam locations to determine where the CAIA exams are offered. For more information and to view a list of current sites offering the CAIA exams, visit Exam Locations.
The CAIA Examination staff uses 70% of the total points as the initial benchmark, but since they compare the candidate’s score against the average exam score, the curve effectively moves the passing score below 70%. The passing score and candidate’s actual score are never disclosed.
The exam is 100% computerized, but don’t expect to get the score right after the exam.
You can expect to get your results within 3 weeks for Level 1 and 6 weeks for Level 2.
The CFA exam is harder according to both student surveys and official pass rates. Only 43% of CFA test-takers pass Level 1, with 47% passing Level 2 and 54% passing Level 3, whereas for CAIA, pass rates are higher for both Level 1 (63% in 2017) and Level 2 (59%).
The CAIA program is divided into two levels. The Level I curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of alternative investment markets, while Level II concentrates on advanced topics in alternative investments. Both levels take a global perspective and incorporate issues of ethics and professional conduct.
CAIA is primarily a multi-asset primer and benchmark for investment professionals. Whether it’s worthwhile or not depends on your career aspirations. About half of all CAIA charter holders work in some investment decision-making capacity (analyst, portfolio manager, asset consultant).
