How long does ACCA take?
ACCA says the exam component can potentially be completed in about two years at the maximum permitted pace. To become an ACCA member, you must also complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module and 36 months of relevant practical experience. If that experience is earned alongside study, the full membership route has a practical minimum of three years. Your route can take longer depending on entry level, confirmed exemptions, paper load, exam results and work commitments.
Do not confuse exams, affiliate status and membership
Most confusing duration advice collapses three different milestones into one number. They are related, but they are not interchangeable.
Exam progress
You progress through the required exams for your entry route. ACCA runs four exam sessions a year and allows a maximum of four exams in one cycle and eight distinct exams in a calendar year.
ACCA affiliate
After completing the applicable exam requirements, candidates can reach affiliate status. The precise timetable depends on exemptions, paper sequencing, passes and the sessions available for each paper.
ACCA membership
Membership requires the exams, Ethics and Professional Skills Module, and PER. PER includes 36 months of relevant supervised experience plus the required performance objectives.

What does the ACCA timeline look like for different learners?
These are planning routes, not promises. ACCA confirms exemptions through its official calculator; a qualification title or job title alone does not settle your route.
School-leaver
If you meet ACCA’s direct-entry requirements, you can enter the main qualification. If not, Foundation-level study may be the route into it. Build relevant work exposure early so PER does not become a separate delay after exams.
Graduate
A relevant degree may reduce the number of exams through confirmed exemptions. That can shorten the exam workload, but it does not remove the need for EPSM or 36 months of relevant experience for membership.
Working professional
A sustainable paper load around closing cycles, audit season and personal commitments is often more valuable than an aggressive plan that creates avoidable resits. Progress can be paired with experience when the role is relevant.
Professional with prior learning
Prior finance or accountancy study can change the route, sometimes substantially. Verify the official result first, then decide whether accepting or waiving an exemption suits your current technical foundation.
Use the official ACCA exemptions information before using any duration estimate. For the detailed decision, read our ACCA exemptions guide.
Can ACCA be completed in two years?
It is possible to complete the exam component in two years if you are able to use the maximum permitted exam pace and your results, progression and available papers align. It is not a realistic promise for every learner. It also does not make you an ACCA member by itself, because membership requires practical experience and EPSM.
Plan for the route you can repeat calmly, not the fastest calendar headline. A pass rate that holds through demanding papers is more useful than a rushed schedule that leads to resits.
Six factors that determine your ACCA duration
Confirmed exemptions
Exemptions can reduce your exam count. They do not replace the membership experience requirement, and they should be checked through ACCA rather than estimated from a degree title.
Paper load and sessions
Session limits create a hard ceiling. The right number of papers is the number you can prepare for thoroughly while maintaining work and personal commitments.
Passes and resits
Resits are normal in a rigorous professional qualification. A realistic plan contains revision time and does not treat every session as guaranteed.
Relevant work experience
Experience can be gained before, during or after exams, but only relevant time counts toward PER. Start recording and seeking supervisor sign-off early.
EPSM and performance objectives
Ethics and practical capability are part of the membership route, not an afterthought to leave until all papers are finished.
Your technical base
Exemptions reduce exam volume, but a weak foundation in a skipped area can slow later papers. Decide with evidence, not only speed.
How should you build your own ACCA timetable?
| Start with | Decide next | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Your official entry route | Confirm direct entry, Foundations or potential exemptions. | That every graduate receives the same exemptions. |
| Your work situation | Map whether current or planned work can contribute to PER. | That any full-time job automatically counts as relevant experience. |
| Your sustainable paper load | Choose a session pattern that allows proper revision and recovery. | That maximum permitted exams is the right pace for everyone. |
| Your membership plan | Schedule EPSM and track performance objectives with a supervisor. | That passing exams alone means you are ready to apply for membership. |

Use work experience to support the route, not postpone it
ACCA says relevant experience can be gained before, during or after exams. For many learners, the sensible route is to build exam progress and PER at the same time, while recording experience and obtaining the necessary sign-off as work develops.
For eligibility and route choices, see ACCA eligibility requirements. For papers and progression, use the ACCA levels and papers guide.
How does the 2027 ACCA redesign affect your timeline?
ACCA has published transition arrangements for learners on the current qualification. The exact effect depends on your current papers, exemptions and progress. Do not base a multi-year plan on an old provider timetable: check ACCA’s current transition information before locking in a route.
- Current learners should check the official transition tool and guidance before building a 2027 or later plan.
- Exemption assessment continues to be based on ACCA’s published arrangements and calculator.
- The need for practical experience remains central to ACCA membership.

Choose a pace you can sustain through work and life
ACCA is not a race to accumulate exam entries. The better question is whether your next paper, work exposure and revision plan reinforce each other. A stable route helps you build technical knowledge, confidence and credible experience at the same time.
Shyam’s teaching observation: The strongest long-term plans treat exemptions as a starting-point decision, then give enough attention to the areas that will reappear in later reporting, audit, performance and strategic papers.

ACCA duration questions, answered directly
How long does ACCA take after 12th?
The answer depends on whether you meet ACCA’s direct-entry requirements or begin through Foundation-level study. The full membership route still requires exams, EPSM and 36 months of relevant practical experience. Read our dedicated ACCA after 12th guide for the entry-route decision.
How long does ACCA take after graduation?
A relevant degree may lead to confirmed exemptions and reduce the number of exams you sit. It does not automatically determine the duration, because exemptions, paper load, passes, EPSM and 36 months of relevant experience still shape the membership timeline.
Can I complete ACCA while working full time?
Yes. Many learners plan ACCA alongside full-time work. A sustainable paper load and recorded relevant experience can be more effective than an aggressive schedule. Your role must be relevant for time to count toward PER.
How many ACCA exams can I take in a year?
ACCA permits a maximum of four exams in an exam cycle and eight distinct exams in a calendar year. That is the maximum allowed pace, not a recommended plan for every learner.
Does ACCA have a time limit?
ACCA’s rules include time limits relating to Strategic Professional exams. Check ACCA’s current time-limit guidance for the rule that applies to your progress.
Can work experience be completed before ACCA exams?
Yes. ACCA allows relevant experience to be gained before, during or after exams. It must meet PER requirements and be appropriately recorded and signed off.
