Internal Audit Practitioner (IAP) is The Institute of Internal Auditors’ foundational internal-audit designation. You can apply without a degree or prior work experience. The current examination uses CIA Part 1: 125 multiple-choice questions in 150 minutes. An active IAP designation also provides a pathway into CIA with a Part 1 waiver. Source: The IIA.
If you’re exploring internal audit, IAP gives you a defined starting point: professional responsibilities, ethics, risk, controls and fraud awareness. It suits students and new auditors, and it also gives professionals without a degree a route toward the wider CIA qualification.
IAP and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) are separate designations. Choosing between them starts with your education, experience and the professional milestone you want next.

Who Can Apply for Internal Audit Practitioner?
IAP has no education or work-experience prerequisite. The application requires proof of identification through The IIA’s Certification Candidate Management System, or CCMS. You must complete the application and pass the examination to earn the award. These are the official IAP eligibility requirements.
You can start while studying at university, moving into your first audit role or changing careers. Experienced professionals can apply too. For someone already eligible for direct CIA entry, the choice is whether an earlier foundational designation serves their plans.
Applying as a Student Is Different from Getting a Student Discount
Students can apply for IAP without completing a degree. The reduced fee has additional enrollment conditions, explained in the fees section below. Check your documentation before paying so the correct rate applies.
For your application, use a current, valid government-issued photo ID. Ensure the name in your CCMS account matches your examination identification. Resolve a name change or mismatch before booking, using The IIA’s Candidate Handbook.
What Is on the IAP Exam?
The current English-language IAP exam follows CIA Part 1, Internal Audit Fundamentals. It contains 125 multiple-choice questions and lasts 150 minutes. The four areas below form the current blueprint. The IIA’s exam syllabus gives the complete objectives.
| Content area | Weight | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Foundations of Internal Auditing | 35% | Internal audit’s purpose, responsibilities, independence and assurance/advisory work. |
| Ethics and Professionalism | 20% | Objectivity, competence, professional care, confidentiality and ethical conduct. |
| Governance, Risk Management and Control | 30% | How organizations are governed, assess risk and design controls. |
| Fraud Risks | 15% | Fraud risks, warning signs and internal audit’s responsibilities. |
Expect to apply concepts to situations. For example, a question may ask who owns a control, whether an auditor’s objectivity is affected, or what evidence supports a conclusion. Understanding the responsibilities in the scenario helps you distinguish close answers.
Check Your Study Material’s Version
Older pages describe a 100-question, two-hour IAP examination or a five-area syllabus. For the current English exam, use resources matching the four areas above. Language matters. English IAP uses the 2025 CIA Part 1 syllabus, while some translated examinations follow different transition schedules. The IIA currently lists Arabic CIA examinations on the 2019 syllabus through 27 December 2026, transitioning on 28 December 2026. Simplified Chinese transitions during the December 2026 testing window. Check The IIA’s language and syllabus schedule and the version applicable to your IAP appointment before choosing study material.
The passing score is 600 on a scaled reporting range of 250–750. This does not mean 80% of answers must be correct. The IIA converts raw performance to a scaled score, as explained in its Candidate Handbook. Our CIA exam format and syllabus guide shows how Parts 2 and 3 extend this foundation.
How Much Does IAP Certification Cost?
Under The IIA’s standard USD schedule, application plus one exam registration totals $430 for members, $685 for nonmembers or $210 for eligible students. These totals exclude preparation, membership dues, applicable taxes and additional attempts.
| Candidate rate | Application | Exam | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIA member | $120 | $310 | $430 |
| Nonmember | $240 | $445 | $685 |
| Eligible student | $45 | $165 | $210 |
Source: The IIA’s certification pricing and student-discount rules. Outside North America, check the National Institute’s current pricing and taxes. The central schedule is a budgeting reference rather than a worldwide fixed price.
For the standard student discount, you must be enrolled at an accredited college or university in at least six semester hours or equivalent, either in the final year of a bachelor’s program or as a graduate student. Submit the required student evidence in CCMS and obtain approval before purchasing.
The member schedule is $255 lower than the nonmember schedule before dues and taxes. Compare that difference with your local membership cost. Membership is optional in many countries, but the current IAP FAQ requires it in the UK and Ireland, South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho.
Keep Training and Official Fees Separate
EduDelphi’s preparation fee is enquiry-led. Your quotation specifies the teaching and study resources included. The IIA application, official examination and membership are separate payments. If CIA is your longer-term goal, our IAP-to-CIA pathway guide explains the additional CIA payments after IAP.
How to Earn the IAP Designation
Apply through CCMS, obtain approval, then register for and schedule the examination. The IIA’s published IAP application process follows this sequence:
-
Choose Your Starting Route
Check whether you want IAP as a first credential or already qualify for direct CIA entry. Review your candidate rate and any local institute instructions.
-
Create or Use Your Existing CCMS Profile
Keep your certification records in one account. Gather valid photo identification and any documents needed to establish a discounted rate.
-
Apply and Complete the Required Steps
Select IAP, pay the application fee and follow the account instructions. After The IIA processes payment, you have 90 days to complete the application process.
-
Register, Schedule and Prepare
Once approved, purchase the exam registration and book your Pearson VUE appointment through the linked account route. Check the identification and test-center rules before your appointment.
-
Pass and Access Your Award
The current IAP FAQ states that official results arrive within three weeks. After program completion, The IIA indicates 7–14 business days for the designation to appear in your account.
The deadlines are different. The 90 days concern completing your application. Once approved into IAP, you have two years to finish the program. Once an exam registration is purchased, the authorization is valid for 180 days or until the IAP program expires, whichever comes first. A single 75-day extension can be purchased for each eligible exam registration, and a one-time 12-month program extension is available. Extensions must be purchased before the relevant expiration date. See The IIA’s registration and extension rules.
Our Pearson VUE scheduling and test-day guide explains the shared IIA testing process. Follow any National Institute-specific administrative instructions that apply in your country.
Is IAP the Right Career Starting Point?
IAP is useful when you want a recognized foundation before progressing into broader internal-audit work. It can support the first stage of a career in audit, controls or assurance by demonstrating knowledge of the professional framework.
The award does not substitute for workplace experience. To assess career fit, look at the responsibilities in your target role: risk assessment, control evaluation, evidence, documentation and communication. Our guide to internal-auditor responsibilities explains how that work develops.

| Your situation | A useful next step |
|---|---|
| Student or new audit professional | Consider IAP for a first professional milestone and structured fundamentals. |
| Professional without a degree | Review IAP as an entry pathway toward CIA, including the later experience requirement. |
| Degree holder planning the full CIA | Compare direct CIA entry with earning IAP first. Separate applications affect your total budget. |
| Existing eligible CIA Part 1 passer | Review The IIA’s IAP award process using your existing CCMS profile. |
Active IAP holders can enter CIA with a Part 1 waiver. They still need the remaining CIA examinations and applicable experience. The detailed IAP-to-CIA eligibility and waiver guide covers those requirements and when to begin the CIA program.
If you already have a qualifying degree and want the full designation, review CIA entry requirements before deciding. IAP is an available milestone, rather than a compulsory extra qualification for every CIA candidate.
How Should You Prepare for IAP?
Start with the current syllabus and The IIA’s free IAP Guidebook. The guidebook explains the qualification and includes example questions. Use it to understand the examination before choosing your preparation resources.
For resource selection and a weekly timetable, use our IAP exam study guide.
Match study materials to the current CIA Part 1 / IAP blueprint. Work through topic questions, record why you missed an answer, then practise mixed questions under the 150-minute limit. Review the reasoning behind incorrect options as well as the correct answer.
For a beginner, one useful checkpoint is whether you can explain the responsibilities of management, the board and internal audit without referring to your notes. That distinction supports questions across governance, controls and independence.

What to Check Before Selecting Preparation
Confirm syllabus coverage, explanations for answer choices, full-length timed mocks and how to get help with difficult topics. Ask what the package includes and how long access lasts. The official application fee does not include a complete preparation course.
EduDelphi provides live IAP teaching, recordings, LMS resources, topic questions, full-length timed mocks and faculty feedback. Advisors can help review suitability, student-rate documentation and the application/booking process. University and employer groups can also enquire about preparation for their learners or teams.
Does IAP Expire or Require Renewal?
IAP no longer has a fixed expiration term, but holders must complete annual certification renewal and the applicable CPE requirements to keep the designation in Active status. Practicing IAP holders need 20 CPE hours and nonpracticing holders need 10, including at least two ethics hours annually. Formally retired holders are exempt while retired. Failure to renew can lead to inactive Grace status and eventual revocation under the annual policy.
Newly certified holders’ initial reporting period runs from certification through 31 December of the following year. Subsequent annual renewal is due by 31 December. Follow The IIA’s Annual Certification Renewal Policy and your applicable institute’s process. EduDelphi’s team can help explain the reporting steps.
Internal Audit Practitioner FAQs
Is IAP the same as CIA Part 1?
The current IAP examination uses CIA Part 1, but IAP and CIA are separate certification programs. Passing the IAP examination and completing the program requirements earns the IAP designation. An active IAP then provides a CIA entry pathway with a Part 1 waiver, subject to the remaining CIA requirements.
Can I get IAP if I already passed CIA Part 1?
The IIA currently allows candidates who passed Part 1 and have an active CIA or valid CIA application to apply for IAP through their existing CCMS profile. The award follows a separate review. Check your record before buying another exam registration. See The IIA’s IAP FAQ.
Is IAP worth it without an audit job?
It can be a useful starting credential if you’re targeting internal audit and want to demonstrate foundational knowledge. Pair your study with practical exposure to processes, controls and evidence. If your target career is primarily accounting, IT or investigations, compare the qualification with that role’s requirements before enrolling.
Do all students qualify for the $210 standard total?
No. The standard reduced rate requires final-year bachelor’s or graduate enrollment at an accredited institution, with at least six semester hours or equivalent. Supporting documents must be approved before purchase. Local institute tariffs can differ from this central schedule.
Do I need to be an IIA member?
Membership is optional in many countries and can affect pricing. The current IAP FAQ requires membership in the UK and Ireland, South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho. Verify your country’s arrangement with the relevant National Institute before paying.
Where do I take the IAP exam?
Schedule the examination through the linked Pearson VUE route after your IAP application is approved and exam registration is purchased. The IIA directs candidates to computer-based test centers. Check the appointments available for your language and location, rather than assuming a live training course includes the official exam.
What is the IAP passing score?
A scaled score of 600 or higher is required on the 250–750 reporting scale. It is not a universal 80% raw-score threshold. Use timed practice to assess your preparation, but distinguish a practice percentage from an official scaled examination result.
When will I receive my IAP result?
The current official FAQ gives a result timeline of within three weeks of the exam date, with an email notification when it is available. After you complete the program, allow the published 7–14 business-day period for the designation to appear in your account.
Eligibility, award and result answers follow The IIA’s current IAP guidance. Pricing follows its standard fee schedule.
