US CMA duration guide

Use roughly a year as an initial reference for passing both US CMA exam parts. In EduDelphi’s completion records, the median was 11.6 months. Your schedule should reflect your weekly study time, existing knowledge and exam appointments. Earning the CMA designation also requires the applicable education and qualifying work experience.

If you already meet those requirements, focus on preparation and the examinations. If you are still studying or gaining experience, you can work toward those milestones alongside exam preparation.

A starting point for your schedule

Plan Around Your Work and Study Commitments

Working full-time? Leave room for busy periods and revision between the parts. Studying full-time? More available hours can support a shorter exam schedule, but allow time to practise unfamiliar subjects before booking.

Completion data, source and methodology

The records cover 4,126 unique CMA learners: 2,487 had passed both parts, 781 were still actively pursuing CMA, 405 had paused or discontinued, and 453 had unverified outcomes at the tracking cutoff.

Completion time runs from the first preparation class to confirmation of passing the second CMA exam part. Duration statistics use the 2,487 completers. They exclude the unfinished and unverified outcomes and should not be read as the expected eventual result for everyone who starts.

The overall median was 11.6 months, with the middle 50% taking 8.2–16.3 months. For working full-time completers, the median was 12.7 months and the middle 50% took 9.2–17.3 months. For full-time student completers, the median was 8.9 months and the middle 50% took 6.3–12.3 months.

Median means half of the completers took less time and half took more. The middle 50% is the range between the 25th and 75th percentiles.

The subgroup table covers 1,595 working full-time completers and 692 full-time student completers. Another 200 completers had other or unverified status and remain included in the overall figures. The 3.8-month difference between subgroup medians is an association, not evidence that employment alone caused the difference.

This is EduDelphi’s historical learner population, with outcomes tracked through October 2026, rather than a global benchmark or a study limited to the new case-based examination format. The intake date range and individual learner records are not published with this summary. The figures were supplied and confirmed by EduDelphi and have not been independently audited.

Two different milestones

When Do You Become a Certified CMA?

You earn the designation after passing both examinations and satisfying IMA’s other certification requirements, including education and qualifying professional experience. A candidate who already meets those requirements has a different remaining timeline from a student or a graduate starting a first finance role.

IMA requires two continuous years of qualifying experience in management accounting or financial management. That experience can be gained before the examinations or within seven years after passing them. Relevant employment can continue while you study. IMA’s experience requirements.

Study and examinations

  1. Prepare for one part
  2. Sit the examination and continue preparation
  3. Pass the second part and receive results

Education and qualifying work

  1. Check what you already satisfy
  2. Complete outstanding education or qualifying experience alongside study
  3. Submit the required evidence for IMA’s review

These lanes can overlap. Certification follows when all requirements are satisfied and IMA completes its review.

“Passing both exam parts and earning the CMA designation are different milestones. Students can plan their exams early, then complete the remaining education and experience requirements.”

What Does Your Starting Point Change?

The examples below are hypothetical planning situations. They explain which requirement might control your finish date.

You already meet education and experience requirements

Your remaining work centres on preparation, both examinations and the certification process. Check your evidence early so missing documents do not become a last-minute delay.

You are a graduate gaining qualifying experience

Study while you work. If you pass both parts after one qualifying year, you still need to complete the remaining experience before certification. You do not have to add two entirely new years after the examinations.

You are still a student

You can plan examinations before completing your degree. Your certification date will depend on completing the accepted education route and qualifying experience as well. A short exam-preparation schedule cannot replace those requirements.

Build your calendar

How Many Months Should You Allow for CMA Study?

Start with the hours you can protect each week, then add revision and examination timing. A timetable based on your busiest normal week is more usable than one built around an unusually quiet week.

As an external planning benchmark, Gleim suggests about 300 study hours across both parts. At 12 hours a week, that is 25 study weeks. This is provider guidance and a simple calculation, not an IMA minimum or a promised completion time.

Study weeks and elapsed months measure different things. Your calendar also includes any breaks, waiting for a suitable testing window, results and a possible retake. That is why a six-month study model and an 11.6-month observed completer median can coexist.

  1. Choose a realistic weekly commitment. Account for month-end close, travel, university examinations or care responsibilities.
  2. Check your starting knowledge. Use topic questions to identify areas requiring full teaching and areas ready for revision.
  3. Work back from an available exam appointment. Leave time for mixed practice and a full-length timed mock before sitting each part.
  4. Review progress before booking the next milestone. A missed study week may be recoverable. Repeated difficulty on unseen questions calls for a topic review.

How Do Exam Windows and Results Affect Your Timeline?

The standard testing windows are January–February, May–June and September–October. A preparation finish date outside an offered window may mean waiting for the next one. Appointment availability also matters, so check your authorization and Prometric options before committing to a calendar.

The current handbook gives different result timings by format:

  • Case-based examinations: approximately two weeks after the end of the month in which you tested.
  • Essay examinations: approximately six weeks after the end of the month in which you tested.

These periods run from month-end, rather than your appointment date. A late-January case-based examination, for example, would point to approximately mid-February for results under that guidance. See the current IMA examination handbook.

A retake needs its own registration and an eligible appointment. Build it into a revised plan rather than assuming you can immediately repeat the examination. Our CMA exam dates and Prometric booking guide covers windows, booking and changes.

Which CMA Deadlines Must You Keep Separate?

Examination deadlines and certification requirements
RequirementCurrent timing
Pass both CMA exam partsWithin three years of entering the CMA program. If both are not passed in time, a passed part expires and the entrance fee must be paid again.
Education verificationSubmit accepted education evidence within seven years of completing the CMA examination.
Qualifying experienceTwo continuous qualifying years, completed before or within seven years of passing the examination.
Individual exam registrationFollow the eligibility dates and testing-window instructions on your IMA authorization. This is a separate clock from the three-year program period.

Certification review comes after the requirements

Passing Part 2, receiving a passing result and receiving your credential are separate events. IMA must have the required evidence and complete its review. Its certificate FAQ describes digital certificate and badge delivery within a few weeks after official certification. That is not a fixed review deadline starting from your last examination. US CMA Duration FAQs

Can I complete US CMA in six months?

Passing both exam parts in six months can be a workable target if your starting knowledge, weekly study time and examination appointments support it. Treat six months as an individual plan, not a universal duration. You must also satisfy the education and experience requirements before certification.

How long does US CMA take after graduation?

Graduation alone does not determine the finish date. A graduate with accepted education and two qualifying years of experience may focus on the examinations and certification review. A graduate starting qualifying employment can study alongside that work and complete any remaining experience afterward.

Can I take CMA exams before finishing my degree?

Yes. You can take the examinations while completing your education. The accepted education requirement and its verification must still be satisfied within IMA’s deadline. Passing both parts before graduation does not itself award the designation.

Can I gain the required experience after passing both parts?

Yes. IMA allows the two continuous qualifying years to be completed before or within seven years of passing the examination. Your duties must meet its management-accounting or financial-management criteria. A job title alone does not establish eligibility. Check IMA’s experience rules.

Does part-time work count toward CMA experience?

Continuous qualifying part-time positions of 20 hours a week can count at one year of experience for every two years worked. At that rate, four years of qualifying part-time employment would satisfy the two-year requirement. Internships, trainee, clerical and nontechnical roles do not qualify under the current handbook.

Does CMA duration differ by country?

The core education, examination and experience requirements apply to the US CMA qualification internationally. Your calendar can still differ because of examination format, local appointment availability, academic commitments and your working schedule. Use your individual authorization and the relevant regional guidance when planning.
