CIA CPE Requirements in 2026
Use this guide to understand your annual CPE hours, ethics requirement, qualifying activities, renewal process, current fees and what happens when a deadline is missed.

How Many CPE Hours Does a CIA Need?

Renewal category and certification status are different things. Practicing, Nonpracticing and Retired determine the annual renewal requirement. Separately, a certification can be Active, in Grace Period (Inactive), or Revoked.

New CIA holders
When Is Your First CIA Renewal Due?
Your first renewal period runs from the date you become certified through 31 December of the following calendar year. This gives a newly certified CIA a longer initial period before the first annual renewal.
Example: if you become certified in July 2026, your first certification renewal is due by 31 December 2027. After that, renewal is annual.
You do not complete a separate renewal at the end of the calendar year in which you first become certified. CPE earned after certification can be applied within the initial reporting period.
This is different from the examination-program deadline. Passing the CIA exams, receiving the designation and maintaining the designation are separate stages.

What Counts Toward CIA CPE?
A qualifying activity should develop professional competence relevant to internal audit. Formal learning generally needs current content, clear learning objectives, a qualified developer or instructor and evidence that you completed it.

The IIA does not prequalify individual CPE activities. The certification holder decides whether an activity meets the policy and retains evidence that supports the CPE claimed. Keep the program description, learning objective, completion evidence and the calculation used.

Caps and calculations can change. Confirm the current Annual Certification Renewal Policy before relying on a less common activity.
Mandatory component
How the Two-Hour Ethics Requirement Works
The two ethics hours are included within the 40-hour or 20-hour annual total. They are not added on top. A practicing CIA therefore needs 40 hours in total, at least two of which address ethics.
Choose learning that clearly develops ethical understanding relevant to professional practice. Keep a certificate or other evidence showing the topic, provider, date and duration. During annual renewal, CIA holders also complete current ethics and professionalism attestations.
CPE hours are not the only annual renewal requirement. Practicing and nonpracticing holders also review the applicable Internal Audit Standards, report whether they conform, and complete The IIA’s ethics and professionalism attestation. Reporting nonconformance with the Standards does not by itself inactivate the certification.
Common mistake: completing 40 general hours but no qualifying ethics learning. Total CPE and ethics CPE are separate checks inside the same annual requirement.
A practical annual schedule
Plan CIA CPE Across the Year
Do not wait until December to work out whether your learning qualifies. A simple quarterly plan gives you time to correct a shortfall and collect missing evidence.
January–March: set the plan
Confirm your renewal category, annual requirement and likely learning sources. Reserve the ethics component early.
April–June: build core hours
Complete structured learning aligned with your role and save supporting records as you go.
July–September: check the gap
Review total hours, ethics hours and category caps. Correct missing evidence before renewal opens.
October–December: complete renewal
For certifications administered directly through IIA Global, renewal is available through CCMS from 1 October to 31 December. National Institute processes may differ, so follow local instructions where applicable.
Shortfalls and surplus hours
Can CIA CPE Hours Carry Over?
CIA CPE does not have a normal unlimited carryover system. If you are short in a reporting period, surplus CPE from the immediately preceding period may cover the deficiency. Hours earned in the following calendar year may also correct the prior deficiency, but hours applied backward cannot also be counted again for the current year.
Example: under the current policy, a practicing CIA who earned 60 hours in the prior period could apply up to 20 surplus hours toward a current-period deficiency. Keep a clear record of the reporting period in which each hour was used.

How to Renew CIA Certification
For certifications administered directly through IIA Global, annual renewal is available through the Certification Candidate Management System from 1 October through 31 December. National Institute-administered processes can differ. Japan and Korea, for example, use their local Institute process under the current global policy.
Review your category
Confirm whether you are practicing, nonpracticing or retired.
Confirm CPE
Check total hours, ethics hours, qualifying activities and category caps.
Complete attestations
Complete the required Standards, ethics and professionalism declarations.
Submit renewal
Use CCMS or the local Institute route that administers your renewal, then pay any applicable fee.
You generally attest to compliance rather than upload every certificate during ordinary renewal. That does not remove the record-keeping requirement: The IIA can select a holder for audit.

CIA Certification Renewal Fees
Under the current standard IIA Global schedule, CIA renewal ranges from $30 to $120 in Active status and $60 to $240 in Grace status, depending on membership. National Institute fees, taxes and administration may differ.

For North American IIA members with active designations, annual certification renewal fees are currently included with membership. Elsewhere, check the National Institute or payment route that administers your renewal.

What Happens If You Do Not Renew by 31 December?
Active
Your renewal is current and you may use the CIA designation under the applicable rules.
Grace Period (Inactive)
If an Active CIA does not complete annual renewal by 31 December, the certification moves to Grace Period (Inactive). The holder may not display CIA after their name or represent themselves as certified.
More than 24 months
A certification that remains in Grace for more than 24 months is Revoked.
Recertification
Under the current route, restoring a Revoked CIA requires a recertification application, applicable fees and successful completion of CIA Part 1.
If your certification is in Grace, complete the outstanding prior-period renewal first and then complete the current period separately. Follow the live instructions shown for your individual record before paying or scheduling anything.
Audit readiness
What CIA CPE Records Should You Keep?
Retain CPE evidence for at least three years. A clean record should make the activity, relevance, duration and completion easy to verify.
- Certificate of completion
- Provider and program title
- Date and learning duration
- Course description or learning objectives
- Transcript or exam result where applicable
- Your calculation for publications or presentations
- Evidence of ethics content
- Notes showing the reporting period used
If a CPE audit identifies insufficient hours, the current policy gives the holder six months to earn the deficient CPE and submit supporting documentation. Failure to provide requested audit information by the stated deadline can result in Revoked status.
Multiple IIA credentials
Can the Same CPE Count for CIA, CRMA and Other IIA Certifications?
Relevant learning can often support more than one IIA designation. You do not automatically need a separate set of hours for every credential. The activity must still be relevant to the knowledge and competence required for each certification, and each designation’s ethics, reporting and renewal conditions must be met.
Keep one clear record showing which designations the activity supports. If you also hold a credential from another professional body, that body’s rules remain separate.
Special circumstances
Hardship Requests and Retired Status
If serious circumstances prevent you from meeting the annual requirement, The IIA has a hardship process. Submit the request with supporting documentation before 31 December; approval is not automatic.
Retired is a formal renewal category for holders who are no longer in the workforce, not an informal description of someone between roles. Retired holders are exempt from annual renewal requirements while they remain formally classified as Retired.

How many CPE hours does a practicing CIA need?
For a standard annual reporting period, a practicing CIA needs 40 CPE hours, including at least two ethics hours within that total. Newly certified CIAs have a longer initial reporting period.
How many CPE hours does a nonpracticing CIA need?
For a standard annual reporting period, a nonpracticing CIA needs 20 CPE hours, including at least two ethics hours within the total.
Does a retired CIA need CPE?

Are the two ethics hours additional to the 40 CIA CPE hours?

The certification moves to Grace Period (Inactive). While in Grace, you may not display CIA after your name or represent yourself as certified. Remaining in Grace for more than 24 months results in Revoked status.
What is the CIA renewal fee?

Can free training count toward CIA CPE?
Yes, if the activity meets The IIA’s current qualification criteria and you retain acceptable evidence. The price of the activity does not determine whether it counts.
Can one course count for multiple IIA certifications?
It can when the content is relevant to the professional competence required for each certification. Each designation’s full annual conditions still apply.
Can I request a hardship exemption?
The IIA provides a hardship-request process for qualifying serious circumstances. Submit the request and evidence before 31 December. Approval is determined by The IIA.
