ACCA to CIA guide

Can You Become a CIA After ACCA?

Yes. Active full ACCA members can apply for The IIA’s one-part Accounting CIA Challenge Exam. A separate option is the traditional three-part CIA program, with exemptions from its education and work-experience supporting requirements for qualified ACCA members. Those supporting exemptions do not remove the traditional examinations.

An ACCA affiliate or student should check their own traditional CIA entry route. Completing ACCA exams alone does not establish full-member Challenge eligibility. ACCA explains both CIA routes.

Your next step depends on your membership status, current CIA progress and the work you want to move into. This guide explains how to choose a route, obtain the right documents and prepare for internal-audit questions.

If you already know you want guided preparation, explore our CIA Challenge Exam course. For an introduction to the credential, start with what CIA certification means.

Your ACCA Status Determines Your CIA Options

Check the status shown in your ACCA membership record before choosing a program. A degree, exam transcript and active professional membership establish different things.

What your current ACCA position means
Your ACCA status CIA Challenge route Next step
Active full ACCA member or FCCA Can apply through the approved accounting pathway. Get current good-standing evidence and compare the two CIA routes.
Affiliate with ACCA exams completed Exam completion alone is insufficient. Assess traditional CIA eligibility now, alongside the steps remaining for ACCA membership.
Current ACCA student Student status does not qualify. Check a degree, experience or IAP entry route rather than assuming you must wait.
Inactive or unclear membership Active qualifying membership must be established. Resolve your status with ACCA and confirm accepted evidence before paying.

ACCA appears on The IIA’s approved accounting-body list. The IIA makes the eligibility decision. For affiliates and students, our CIA requirements guide explains the separate degree, experience and IAP pathways.

You can compare both options now. If you already meet a traditional entry route, consider your target date and how close you are to full ACCA membership. Waiting for membership makes sense only when it fits your circumstances. An advisor can help you compare starting CIA preparation now with preparing for Challenge after membership.

Challenge Exam or Traditional CIA: Which Route Fits?

For an eligible ACCA member seeking a single-exam route, start by evaluating Challenge. The traditional route remains useful when you prefer staged examinations or have already made progress in that program.

Two routes to the CIA designation
Decision Accounting Challenge Traditional CIA
Entry basis Active membership in an approved accounting body, including ACCA. A recognized entry route, with supporting exemptions available for qualified ACCA members.
Examinations One exam: 150 multiple-choice questions, 180 minutes. Three separate exam parts.
Supporting requirements for full ACCA members Qualifying membership evidence and valid government-issued photo ID. No separate proof of experience for this program. Education and work-experience supporting-requirement exemptions; traditional exams remain.
Study structure Prepare across the unified Challenge syllabus for one sitting. Prepare and sit the parts separately within the program period.
Best decision point Do you want a single sitting and meet active-member requirements? Do staged exams or existing progress make this route more practical?

Both routes lead to CIA once their requirements are completed. The traditional program covers internal-audit fundamentals, engagement work and the internal-audit function. Challenge has its own current unified blueprint. Compare the preparation you need, rather than assuming one examination is automatically easier.

Other accounting qualifications have their own evidence requirements. See the CPA and CA Challenge guide if you hold another qualifying credential.

What CIA Exemptions Do ACCA Members Receive?

On the traditional CIA route, qualified ACCA members may receive exemptions from the education and work-experience supporting requirements. They still complete the applicable examination requirements. The one-part Challenge program is a separate application pathway.

Choose the appropriate route in your application and supply the evidence requested for it. A supporting exemption changes the documentation required for that program. It does not itself award CIA or convert an existing three-part enrollment into Challenge. The IIA publishes the supporting-requirement exemptions.

ACCA exemptions and CIA exemptions are different.

Exemptions received while studying ACCA concern the ACCA qualification. Once you are an active full member, the CIA accounting pathway assesses that qualifying membership and its evidence. Do not use an ACCA exam-exemption letter as a substitute for current good-standing confirmation.

Application documents

How to Get Your ACCA Letter of Good Standing

ACCA members who have met their annual CPD requirement and paid their annual subscription can request a Letter of Good Standing. ACCA’s published route is MyACCA → Personal documents.

  1. Confirm your membership is active and check any outstanding subscription or CPD issue.
  2. Open your MyACCA account and find the Personal documents area.
  3. Request the good-standing letter and check your name and membership details.
  4. Keep the current document ready for the IIA application.

A historical certificate confirms membership at its issue date. A current good-standing letter confirms your present standing. Use the document requested by The IIA. See ACCA’s letter instructions.

Professional reviewing membership documentation before an exam application

Prepare valid government-issued photo identification too. Check the Candidate Handbook’s application and test-day ID rules, and ensure your exam-day identification matches the name in CCMS. Resolve a changed name or conflicting record before scheduling. Read the official identification requirements.

Our team can guide you through requesting and checking the evidence. ACCA issues its documents, and The IIA decides whether they satisfy your application.

How to Apply for the CIA Challenge Exam After ACCA

The steps below follow The IIA’s global CCMS process. Where a National Institute administers certification locally, follow its current country-specific instructions and payment arrangements.

  1. Confirm Membership and Prepare Documents

Check the accounting-body list and gather current ACCA good-standing evidence and valid government-issued photo ID.

  2. Apply Through CCMS

Create or sign into your account. Select the CIA application and the Challenge program for qualified chartered accountants and certified public accountants. Complete the requested fields, payment and document upload.

  3. Receive Approval, Then Register

Respond to evidence requests and wait for approval. Purchase the exam registration through your approved program when you are ready to plan the sitting.

  4. Schedule the Test-Center Appointment

Use linked Pearson VUE access from CCMS. Choose an available appointment within an offered window and your authorization period. Save the booking confirmation.

Applications are open year-round. Regular testing months are February, June, September and November, with some local arrangements, including mainland China, differing. The IIA’s accounting pathway controls these administrative rules.

Application: 90 Days

Complete the application within 90 days after payment processing. Otherwise it expires and you must reapply.

Program: Three Years

Complete the regular accounting Challenge program within its three-year eligibility period.

Registration: 180 Days

Purchase/registration gives 180 days or until program expiry, whichever is earlier, to sit the exam.

The application deadline is set out in the Candidate Handbook. Challenge examination and program extensions are unavailable. Our Challenge dates guide explains windows and results in more detail. Check the next window before buying the exam registration.

CIA Challenge Exam Fees for ACCA Members

Standard published USD fees: application and first examination
Item IIA member Nonmember
Challenge application $150 $380
First exam registration $845 $1,245
First-attempt total $995 $1,625

The member schedule is $630 lower before membership costs. ACCA and IIA memberships are independent. Check your actual IIA dues, joining costs and taxes to calculate the net saving.

For comparison, the live standard pricing page currently totals $990 member / $1,505 nonmember for traditional CIA application plus the three first-attempt exam registrations. A single Challenge exam therefore does not automatically mean lower official fees. These totals exclude preparation, membership dues, retakes and applicable taxes. Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Check The IIA’s current pricing.

Candidates in the UK/Republic of Ireland and South Africa currently need IIA membership. Other National Institute prices and arrangements can differ. The CIA certification cost guide explains the wider budget. EduDelphi preparation is quoted separately on enquiry.

From accounting to internal audit

What ACCA Members Should Study for the Challenge Exam

Review the entire current syllabus, then spend extra time on subjects outside your everyday work. The unified blueprint effective 1 June 2026 covers professionalism and quality, audit operations and planning, engagement planning, performance, and results and monitoring. Our Challenge syllabus guide explains the five areas and weightings.

Operational Controls

Extend financial knowledge to procurement approvals, access controls, service objectives and other business processes. A correct accounting entry can coexist with a weak control.

Audit-Function Responsibilities

Review the chief audit executive’s role, board oversight, risk-based planning, resources and quality. Distinguish management’s decisions from internal audit’s responsibilities.

Evidence and Conclusions

Choose procedures that answer the engagement objective. Decide whether the evidence supports a finding and examine the cause of the weakness before proposing action.

Reporting and Follow-Up

Practise communicating findings, assessing action plans and checking implementation. Management agreeing to an action is different from evidence that the control works.

These are preparation recommendations based on The IIA’s current syllabus. They are not an official ACCA exemption map or a measured percentage of subject overlap.

A Correct Supplier Payment Can Still Have Weak Controls

Suppose a supplier invoice is recorded accurately and paid for goods received. The same employee created the vendor record and approved the payment.

An internal-audit review would examine system access, approval rules and evidence of independent review. The transaction can be accounted for correctly while authorization and segregation of duties need attention.

This is an original hypothetical teaching illustration, not a learner case or an official IIA exam question.

Build Practice Around Your Gaps

Start with topic-wise questions to identify unfamiliar concepts. Review why each answer fits the scenario and why the closest alternative fails. Once you have covered all five areas, use full-length timed simulator exams and discuss recurring errors with faculty.

Use a target window to organize the work, but leave time for mock review and revision before purchasing your examination registration.

Already Taking the Three-Part CIA?

Review your current progress before considering a switch. Count the parts passed, remaining registrations and preparation still needed. Compare those with the cost and study work for Challenge. Our Challenge vs three-part CIA comparison includes worked examples of the remaining official payments.

The IIA currently requires traditional-program deactivation before enrollment in Challenge and does not transfer or refund fees between the programs. Ask CCMS Help about your account before taking action. See the official switching FAQ.

EduDelphi advisors can review your existing progress and remaining costs with you. The review helps you choose a sensible next step, while The IIA controls program changes.

Is CIA Worth Adding to ACCA?

CIA is a useful specialization when your target work involves internal audit, controls, risk or organizational assurance. ACCA provides an accounting base. CIA extends the focus to how the internal-audit function plans engagements, evaluates business processes and communicates results.

For a role focused mainly on taxation or financial reporting, another specialist qualification may be a closer fit. Examine the work expected in your target role before choosing. Our guide to what a CIA does gives practical examples.

CIA After ACCA: Frequently Asked Questions

Can an ACCA affiliate take the CIA Challenge Exam?

Affiliate status and passing all ACCA exams alone do not establish the active full membership required for the accounting Challenge route. Check your membership status with ACCA. You may have a separate traditional CIA entry route through your education, experience or IAP designation.

Can I start CIA while I am still an ACCA student?

Yes, if you qualify through an applicable traditional CIA route. Student status alone does not qualify you for Accounting Challenge. Compare your existing eligibility with the time remaining to achieve full ACCA membership. See our CIA eligibility guide.

Do ACCA members have to take all three CIA exam parts?

An eligible member choosing Accounting Challenge takes one examination. A member choosing traditional CIA completes the traditional exams despite the education and work-experience supporting exemptions. Select the program deliberately before applying.

Does FCCA have a separate CIA Challenge pathway?

FCCA is ACCA fellowship rather than a separate CIA examination pathway. An active fellow uses the ACCA accounting-body route and supplies the required current membership evidence.

Can I use my ACCA certificate instead of a good-standing letter?

Follow the document request in your IIA application. A historic membership certificate does not necessarily demonstrate current standing. ACCA lets eligible members request the current letter through MyACCA’s Personal documents area.

Do exemptions I received during ACCA affect CIA eligibility?

The published Accounting Challenge route assesses active membership in an approved body and the required evidence. It does not list a separate blanket exclusion for members who received ACCA exam exemptions. If your status or documentation is unusual, confirm it with The IIA before paying.

Does ACCA membership give me IIA member prices?

No. The memberships are independent. IIA member pricing requires the applicable active IIA membership at purchase. Membership is currently mandatory for candidates residing in the UK/Republic of Ireland and South Africa, and local arrangements can differ.

Can I switch to Challenge after passing a CIA part?

Discuss the account change with CCMS Help and review your remaining costs first. The IIA requires deactivation of the traditional program and does not transfer or refund program fees. Existing exam progress makes this a decision to review individually.

Does passing Challenge give the same CIA designation?

Yes. Completing the approved Challenge program leads to the CIA designation, not a separate lower-level certificate. Official results are currently issued within three weeks, followed by final program review. See the results and certification timeline.

How do ACCA CPD and CIA CPE work if I maintain both?

ACCA membership and CIA certification have separate ongoing requirements. Check each body’s rules when planning CPD and CPE, and retain evidence for any activity claimed under either system. Maintaining CIA follows The IIA’s renewal rules rather than an automatic requirement to keep ACCA membership forever. Our CIA CPE requirements guide explains the CIA side.
