CPA and CA to CIA

Can You Earn CIA Through One Challenge Exam?

Yes. Active holders of approved CPA, CA and other qualifying accounting credentials can use The IIA’s one-part Accounting CIA Challenge Exam pathway. The exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions and allows 180 minutes. Eligibility depends on your exact professional body and current standing—not simply passing accounting examinations or holding an accounting degree.

For a U.S. CPA, the qualifying credential is an active state-board license. Passing the CPA exams alone does not establish eligibility. See The IIA’s accounting eligibility instructions.

Your accounting qualification provides a route into CIA. Preparing for the examination means working across internal audit, including operational controls, audit-function governance and follow-up on management actions.

Start with your credential status and application documents. Then use the preparation priorities below to build on the work you already know.

Key Takeaways

  • Check your exact accounting body and current credential status before paying.
  • Application approval, exam registration and appointment booking are separate steps.
  • Review the whole current syllabus, including subjects outside your accounting role.
Check your qualification

Who Can Take the CIA Challenge Exam as a CPA or CA?

The accounting pathway is for active holders of qualifications from approved bodies. Students are ineligible. Use your current license or membership record, rather than relying on a degree, an exam-pass letter or the letters used in a job title.

Check the credential you will use for the application
Your situation Your next step
Active U.S. CPA license Check current state-board licensure and prepare the requested evidence.
CPA exams passed, license not yet obtained Complete licensure before relying on the U.S. CPA qualification for this route.
Active CPA from another approved body Check that body’s listing and obtain its current qualification evidence.
Active CA from an approved institute Prepare the required membership or good-standing evidence.
Inactive, expired or unclear standing Resolve your status with the issuing body and confirm the accepted evidence with The IIA before paying.

If your body is absent from the list, examine the traditional CIA requirements. An accounting qualification can be relevant to that pathway even when it does not establish Challenge eligibility.

Which CPA and CA Bodies Are Approved?

The approved list spans accounting bodies across North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Examples include CPA licenses from any U.S. State Board, CPA Canada, CPA Australia, CA ANZ, ACCA, ICAEW, ICAS, ICAI, ICMAI, ICAP, ISCA, SOCPA and SAICA. Check the live approved-body list for your exact credential before paying. The IIA announced 17 additional accounting bodies in April 2026.

The evidence follows the qualification. A U.S. CPA relies on licensure, while an accountant qualified through another body follows that body’s membership or good-standing process. Use the route that matches your own credential.

ACCA is also listed. ACCA members should check their membership status and the applicable supporting requirements. This guide focuses on CPA and CA applicants. For full members, affiliates and students, see our CIA options after ACCA guide.

Prepare before payment

What Documents Do CPA and CA Applicants Need?

Prepare a current letter of good standing from your approved accounting body or, where eligibility is verified through licensure, the applicable current license evidence. You also need valid government-issued photo identification. A qualification certificate alone may not establish your current standing.

Compare the name on these records with your CCMS profile. Check your primary address and email as well. A name change or inconsistent record should be resolved before submission.

For an institute-specific example, ICAP publishes instructions for obtaining the supporting letter. Other bodies use their own request processes.

Check the Identification Rules

Check identification before applying and before test day. The IIA requires current, valid government-issued photo identification. The handbook lists passports, government-issued driver’s licenses, military IDs and certain residency documents among acceptable examples. Your exam-day identification must match the name in your CCMS profile. Resolve a name change or document mismatch before scheduling.

The handbook sets out two separate country rules: the application ID must be issued by the country of your primary CCMS address; a government-issued local-language ID is accepted only when issued in the country where you test. If you live abroad or use cross-border documents, confirm the applicable instructions with The IIA before submitting. See the Candidate Handbook’s identification requirements.

Separate proof of work experience is not required for the accounting Challenge program. Your accounting body’s requirements for obtaining and maintaining the qualifying credential still apply.

Application to appointment

How to Apply for the Accounting CIA Challenge Exam

The steps below follow The IIA’s published global CCMS process. National Institutes can have different payment, tax or administrative arrangements. Follow the instructions for your country before purchasing.

  1. Confirm Your Qualification and Documents

Find your body on the approved list, confirm active standing and gather the evidence. Check names and profile details before opening the application.

  2. Select the Accounting Challenge Program

Sign in to CCMS, The IIA’s Certification Candidate Management System. Select “Apply for Certified Internal Auditor”, then “CIA Challenge Program for Qualified Chartered Accountants and Certified Public Accountants”.

  3. Submit the Application and Complete Approval

Pay the application fee, provide the requested documents and complete the remaining application steps. Respond to any evidence requests. Wait for approval before purchasing the examination.

  4. Purchase the Exam Registration

After approval, open your program in CCMS and register for the exam. Check the authorization expiry before choosing a testing window.

  5. Book Your Pearson VUE Appointment

Use the linked Pearson VUE access through CCMS. Choose an available authorized test-center appointment, save the confirmation and check its location, date and time.

Our Challenge Exam dates guide explains offered windows. For arrival and identification checks, use the Pearson VUE test-day guide.

Keep These Three Deadlines Separate

Application: 90 Days

After The IIA processes payment, complete the application within 90 days. Otherwise it expires and you must reapply.

Program: Three Years

The regular accounting pathway has a three-year eligibility period to complete the program.

Exam: 180 Days

Purchase/registration gives 180 days or until program expiry, whichever is earlier, to schedule and sit the exam.

A booked appointment must fit an offered testing window and your authorization. Challenge exam and program extensions are unavailable. The application deadline comes from the Candidate Handbook. The accounting-pathway FAQs explain program eligibility and registration expiry.

Accounting Membership and IIA Membership Are Different

Your approved accounting qualification establishes eligibility for this pathway. An active IIA membership recognized at purchase establishes access to IIA member pricing. Holding CPA or CA membership does not itself provide that discount.

Candidates residing in the UK/Republic of Ireland or South Africa must currently be IIA members. Other National Institute arrangements can differ. See The IIA’s country-specific membership guidance.

Official fees and study costs

How Much Does the CPA/CA Challenge Route Cost?

Standard published application and first exam fees, USD
Item IIA member Nonmember
Application $150 $380
Exam registration $845 $1,245
First-attempt total $995 $1,625

The totals are application plus one registration under The IIA’s standard published pricing. They exclude membership dues, preparation, retakes and applicable taxes. The member schedule is $630 lower, but that is a pricing difference—not automatically a $630 net saving. Compare it with your actual membership dues, joining costs and taxes. The IIA states that application and examination fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Outside North America, check National Institute pricing and payment arrangements. Preparation resources are sold separately. EduDelphi’s training quotation explains your selected teaching and study package. For a fuller budget, see our CIA certification cost guide.

What Is on the Current Accounting Challenge Exam?

The unified Challenge syllabus effective 1 June 2026 covers five areas. CPA and CA applicants prepare for the same current blueprint, rather than a qualification-specific shortened syllabus.

Content area Weight
Internal Audit Professionalism and Quality 20%
Internal Audit Operations and Audit Plan 15%
Engagement Planning 20%
Engagement Performance 25%
Engagement Results and Monitoring 20%

Accounting to internal audit

What Should CPA and CA Candidates Study First?

Begin with the subjects furthest from your current work. A financial-statement auditor, tax specialist and management accountant can hold the same qualification while needing different preparation.

Our recommended review checks audit-function governance and operational controls early. Then it tests whether you can apply familiar evidence and control concepts to the responsibilities in an internal-audit scenario.

Accounting knowledge still matters. The current Challenge syllabus includes finance and accounting concepts within engagement planning. It also covers governance, audit strategy, quality, business processes, fraud and technology risk, reporting and follow-up.

Familiar accounting work What to review for internal audit
Financial-statement accuracy Operational objectives, service risks and nonfinancial controls.
Financial audit testing Engagement objectives, scope, criteria and procedures.
Identifying control weaknesses Findings, root causes, recommendations and management actions.
Collecting audit evidence Whether evidence supports the particular conclusion being drawn.
External-audit engagement duties Responsibilities of the chief audit executive, board and management.
Issuing an audit opinion Monitoring implementation and communicating unresolved risk.

These are EduDelphi preparation priorities drawn from the current syllabus. They are not official exemptions or a measured percentage of overlap.

A practical control example

A Correctly Recorded Expense Can Still Have Weak Approval

Suppose an expense is recorded in the right account and period, with a valid receipt. The manager who incurred it also approved their own reimbursement.

The accounting entry can be correct while authorization remains weak. An internal-audit review would examine approval rules, workflow access and the actual transaction trail, including whether an independent reviewer checked the expense.

A conclusion should reflect the evidence. One self-approved item warrants examining the control and relevant transactions. It does not by itself prove a wider fraud scheme.

Original hypothetical teaching illustration. It is not a learner case or an official, recalled or live IIA exam question.

Audit professionals discussing an expense approval process

When reviewing an answer, ask who owns the decision, what the engagement is trying to establish and which action the available evidence supports. The Global Internal Audit Standards provide the professional context for those responsibilities.

Build your study plan

A Practical CPA/CA Challenge Preparation Plan

Review the Whole Syllabus

Attempt a current topic-based diagnostic and identify gaps across all five areas. Check the reason behind each mistake, including unfamiliar concepts, responsibility errors and premature conclusions.

Study and Practise by Area

Work through the weaker topics, then explain why the best answer fits and why the closest alternative fails. Revisit the concept when your explanation is uncertain.

Complete Timed Simulator Exams

Use full-length mixed mocks to practise pacing and sustained judgment. Review repeated mistakes with faculty, then plan your appointment around progress and the available windows.

Challenge Exam or Traditional CIA?

If you hold an active approved accounting qualification, compare the one-exam route with the traditional three-part program before applying. Existing exam progress, your current program and preparation needs can affect the decision. For a side-by-side decision and worked remaining-cost examples, compare Challenge with three-part CIA.

Separate supporting-requirement exemptions are available within the traditional CIA route. Active U.S. CPA license holders may be considered for an education exemption, while qualified ACCA members may receive exemptions from the education and work-experience supporting requirements. These are different from the one-part Challenge pathway: they do not themselves waive traditional CIA exams or turn the traditional route into a one-exam program. See The IIA’s eligibility and exemption guidance.

If you are already enrolled in the traditional program, contact CCMS Help before switching. The IIA requires program deactivation and states that fees are non-refundable and non-transferable between programs. For the broader career decision, read CIA vs CPA.

Common accounting-candidate questions

CPA and CA Challenge Exam FAQs

Can I apply after passing the CPA exams but before getting licensed?

For the U.S. CPA route, obtain the qualifying active state-board license first. An exam-pass letter alone does not establish the credential required for this pathway. If you hold another approved accounting qualification, check that separate basis for eligibility.

Can an inactive CPA license qualify?

The published route requires active qualification status. Resolve an inactive or expired license with the issuing board and confirm the evidence accepted by The IIA before applying.

Can ICAI and ICAEW members take the Challenge Exam?

Both institutes appear on The IIA’s approved list. Applicants must meet the active qualification and evidence requirements. Student status is insufficient. Check the current list and request the required supporting documents from your institute.

Do I need to submit a separate degree or work-experience record?

The accounting route asks for qualifying accounting evidence and government-issued photo ID. Separate proof of experience is not required for this Challenge program. Follow any additional evidence request shown in your application.

Can I apply at any time of year?

Applications are open year-round. The regular testing months are February, June, September and November. Local arrangements, including mainland China’s timetable, can differ. Your appointment must fit an offered window and your registration authorization. Check the current Challenge Exam dates and applicable local instructions.

How long should a CPA or CA study for the Challenge Exam?

Set the schedule from your syllabus gaps, available weekly study time and mock review. Operational audit and audit-function management can need close study even for experienced accountants. Leave time for full-length practice and error analysis before your target window.

Is there a current pass rate specifically for CPA and CA candidates?

We have not verified a current official CPA/CA-specific Challenge pass-rate table. Traditional CIA part-level rates describe a different examination. Use current topic coverage and your own practice results to plan preparation.

What is the Challenge Exam passing score?

The CIA reporting scale is 250 to 750, with 600 required to pass. A scaled score of 600 does not mean 80% correct. The IIA does not publish one universal raw-score percentage that guarantees a pass. See the official scoring guidance.

What happens if I fail the accounting Challenge Exam?

A further attempt requires new registration and payment. The minimum retake wait is 30 days, and the appointment must fall within an offered window. The regular accounting program permits seven retakes, or eight total attempts, within its three-year eligibility period. See the official retake FAQ.

When will I receive my result and CIA designation?

From the September 2026 testing window onward, official Challenge Exam results are issued within three weeks of the exam date. The immediate unofficial result used previously is no longer provided. After you pass and all program requirements are complete, The IIA performs its final certification review. Its accounting FAQ indicates approximately 7–14 business days for the designation to appear. Allow up to 14 business days before requesting an update about a delay. See the official results process and Accounting Challenge FAQ.

Can EduDelphi help with the application and preparation?

Yes. The team can help check your approved-body listing, organize supporting documents and guide application and booking steps. The preparation review identifies subjects to prioritize. Your accounting body issues qualification evidence, and The IIA decides eligibility and awards CIA.
